Boyer Says Jackson
Could Be Difference
...By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPI) — “This
could be an exciting year for
us," says a seemingly over
cautious Clete Boyer.
"And there’s the man that
could do it for us,” he added,
pointing a finger a little Sonny
Jackson.
It doesn’t show in the boxscore,
but Jackson did it Wednesday
night as the Atlanta Braves
swept to their third consecutive
victory over the San Francisco
Giants, this one 4-1.
Jackson doubled and scored
the game’s last run in the sixth
after Boyer had slammed a
homer on the previous offering
off Giant starter and loser Bob
Bolin, but he may have won the
game in the Giants’ first.
With a run in and the bases
full of Giants and starter Milt ,
Pappas struggling visibly, San
Francisco third baseman Don
Mason hit a shot up the middle
—an apparent base hit. But
Jackson swept across on the
second base side of the bag to
throw out the speedy Mason and
end the threat.
Twice more in the game,
Jackson made superb plays to
rob Giants of hits, each time ;
ranging far to his left.
•‘l’ve never seen a shortstop j
go up the alleys as well as he
can," Boyer continued, choosing '
his words carefully. ‘‘Nope,
never,” said the veteran third
baseman—last member of the
