three battles from Tuesday in
which 196 Communists were
killed, boosting to more than
1,000 the guerrilla death toll
since Saturday.
Marines Lose 11 Men
Two of the battles raged 30
miles from Saigon and six
miles from Da Nang. U.S.
Marines in the Da Nang-area
sighing reported losing 11 men
killed and 22 wounded, upping
American losses since Saturday
to more than 120 killed and
more than 400 wounded.
Seven flights of 852 bombers
went after Communist hideouts
between Saigon and the Cambo
dian border overnight, hitting
12 to 60 miles from the capital
where intelligence reports have
said the guerrillas are on the
move.
The shelling of Da Nang
preceded the arrival in Saigon
of Secretary of State William
P. Rogers, who will spend
almost a week here discussing
ways to bring peace to South
Vietnam and begin pulling out
American troops.
All but one of the dead and
three of tne wounded in Da
Nang were South Vietnamese
civilians. The others were
government soldiers apparently
living with their families in the

Shelling Attacks.
Among the provincial capitals
targeted in the overnight
shelling attacks were An Loc
north of Saigon, where five
civilians were killed, and My
Tho southwest of Saigon, where
10 persons were wounded.
Military spokesmen reported
these three fights which added
196 guerrillas Tuesday to the
death count for the four-day-old
offensive:
—3O miles northwest of
Saigon, U.S. 25th Infantry
Division soldiers killed 50
Communists while losing three
killed themselves in an attack
on a guerrilla base camp.
—U.S. Marines and South
Vietnamese troops backed by
dive bombers killed 81 guerril
las six miles southwest of Da
Nang. The Leathernecks report
ed losing 11 killed and 22
wounded.
—American helicopters and
fighter-bombers supported U.S.
Green Berets and South Vietna
mese Irregulars who reported
65 Communists slain 11 miles
southwest of Dak To in the
Central Highlands. Allied losses
were “light."
