Where will
displaced go?
More and more the tide is running
against county prison camps in Georgia.
Taylor County has decided to close its
camp and became the 16th in the state in
recent months to do so.
Some other camps are under investiga
tion and may follow suit.
Some county camps, no doubt, should be
closed.
Some state officials have indicated coun
ty operated prison camps will be a thing of
the past in a few more years.
The trend is clearly indicated. But what
will happen to the prisoners now housed in
them is nebulous to say the least.
Some state officials are pushing for large
regional prisons. But this possibility is far
from becoming a reality.
Constructing such facilities and staffing
them takes a long time. A shining example
of this is the diagnostic and classification
center at nearby Jackson.
Even though the center is operating on a
limited basis now, some major sections
have not been constructed yet.
And work has been under way on the cen
ter for a couple of years or more.
If the state pushes too fast in eliminating
county prison camps, it may find itself de
sperately looking for space for the dis
placed prisoners.
Hitting the Silk
Is Old Stuff Now
It was just 50 years ago, that a crowd gathered at Mc-
Cook Field in Dayton, Ohio, expecting to see a nut named
Leslie L. Irvin kill himself.
The 23-year-old barnstorming balloonist and para
chutiat intended to make the first free-fall parachute jump
out of an airplane.
Many people had made jumps before that, but always
with a line attached to the aircraft or balloon which auto
matically opened the chute. Aeromedical experts of the
day were unanimous in the opinion that a man falling
through the air would lose consciousness before he could
pull the ripcord.
Irvin proved the experts wrong, though he did break an
ankle. That same year he founded a parachute manufactur
ing company (now Irvin Industries, Inc.) and two years
later organized the Caterpillar Club.
Named after the little worm that made the silk of which
early parachutes were made, the Caterpillar Club wa a
opened to anyone whose life was saved by a parachute.
Today, that exclusive club has more than 250,000
members in 62 countries. Its members, none of whom
really wanted to join, include such aviation heroes as
Charles Lindbergh and Gen. James Doolittle.
Ironically, Irvin who died in 1966, never qualified for
his own club. None of his more than 300 jumps was en
emergency.

Tension
How should a Christian deal
with tensions these days? A.M.P.
Tension Is a good thing If we
know how to handle it. Tension
can be the nerves taut, ready
for action: or It can be the ner
ves on edge ready to break.
Much depends on what we do
with our tensions. Take tension
away from a violin and there
could be no music. It is tension
on the string that brings the
tone to pitch and makes possi
ble the beautiful melody. A ver
se in the Bible goes like this:
“Casting all your care (or ten
sions) on Him, for He careth for
you.” Just as a fine musical In
strument in the hands of a no
vice can be tragic, our tensions
if handled inadequately, by our
selves can bring disaster. Put
yourself in the hands of the
Master, and let Him direct ydur
tensions. Cast the instrument of
your life into His hands, and
He will bring forth melody In
stead of discord.
