THE FACES of a prime minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, prime minister of-Israel, is
described as a courageous fighter, a tireless worker and a dedicated diplomat. She
has taken over the reins of government at one of the most crucial periods in her
country’s young history. If she is successful in securing peace for Israel, it will be
due in part to inspiration from a brooch, one of the few pieces of jewelry she wears.
It is inscribed: “Let her own works praise her.”
Harvard Man Invades Elite
Movie Directors Group
By VERNON SCOTT
VPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD (UPI t—Movie
directors are a boisterous breed
of characters. Most of them
were film editors, unsuccessful
actors or oldtlmers who hand
cranked the cameras them
selves.
This elite group has been
invaded by...hold your breath, a
Harvard man.
He is Michael Ritchie, 30,
born In Waukesha. Wis., and
raised in California. How could
a Harvard man go so wrong?
Well, they don’t have a
dramatic department at Har
vard,” Ritchie said. “But the
various houses at the school put
on plays which gave us plenty
of freedom for innovation.” ..
Looks Like Vndergrad
Ritchie Is 6-feet, 6-inches tall
and wears a mustache to erase
his youth. It doesn’t work. He
still looks like a Harvard
undergrad.
“Our house had a contest for
playwriting, and I was the only
one with enough enthusiasm to
direct It.” Ritchie said. “The
title was ‘Oh Dad. Poor Dad,
Mother Hung You In the Closet
and I’m Feeling So Sad.”
“I produced the show, direct
ed it, built the sets and props,
and then I talked the Boston
critics into seeing the play.
“Because nothing much hap
pens at Harvard in stage

presentations even some New
York people came up for
opening night. The reviews
were sensational and the play
went to Broadway.”
So did Ritchie.
Producer Robert Saudek was
Impressed with the kid’s talent,
and after Ritchie was graduat
ed In 1960 he was made
Saudek’s assistant.
At that time Saudek was
producing “Omnibus” for tele
vision. As assistant producer,
young Ritchie was a “gofer.”
He’d go for hamburgers,
cigarettes, errands and other
vital assignments.
Directed in TV
Next he worked on “Profiles
in Courage,” directing two of
them for television. Thereafter
Ritchie was lost in television’s
boondocks, directing “The Man
From U.N.C.L.E.” “Felony
Squad,” “Dr. Kildare” and
such other forgettable sagas as
“Tlie Big Valley.”
Now the Harvard man has
completed his first feature
length motion picture, “Down
hill Racers,” an inside look at
competitive international
skiing.
Ritchie doesn’t ski.
“The important thing is that
we shot it all in Austria,
Switzerland and Colorado in 99
days for $2 million.”
Why is that so important?
“I brought the picture in on
time and on budget.”
