Three Region
Championships
Although the Griffin High football, base
ball and track teams had problems during
the 1968-69 term, the success of the
school's overall athletic program wasn't
too bad.
The Eagles won region championships in
three out of six sports in which they com
peted. (This does not include girls basket
ball.)
The victories started with basketball.
The Eagles capped off a highly success
ful and thriil-packed season by winning
the Region 7-AAA championship.
The Eagles were rated no better than
dark-horse contenders when the season
started. However, some fine coaching and
a lot of dedication and hustle by the play
ers carried Griffin to the state tournament.
Griffin followed up by winning region
championships in golf and tennis.
The golf team, under the guidance of
Coach Max Dowis, had little trouble wrap
ping up the region title and going on to
finish fifth in the state.
Coach Joe Burson and Tammy Weaver
put together a fine tennis team.
Griffin won more than its share of
matches in regular season and went on to
capture the 7-AAA team title.
Teams were awarded a point each time
one of its players advanced in the 7-AAA
Tournament. The girls started off by win
ning four first round matches. The boys
took over then.
Al Jolly and John Hemphill won the re
gion doubles.
Jolly and Hemphill piled up team points
while they were battling their way to the
doubles title.
A final count showed Griffin ahead of
Avondale, 11-10. Griffin was presented the
trophy.
Three championships in one year isn't
too bad Not many schools bettered that
record this year.
Let Russians
Chew On This
To follow up the manned lunar landing, scheduled for
this summer, National Aeronautics and Space Administra
tion- has proposed an Apollo Applications Program, which
would consist of five space missions.
NASA has already designated the first flight as AAP-2.
The second flight, naturally, will be AAP-1. AAP-3A is
the designation for the third, AAP-3 for the fourth and
AAP-4 for the fifth.
Let the Russians try to figure that out.

Swearing
Mv sister-in-law claims she is
a Christian and yet she swears
continously. What do you
think of such a person? M.A.C.
Such a person, X would think,
is either hopelessly confused or
else is not a Christian at all, but
is giving a demonstration of pure
hypocrisy. We are commanded
in Exodus 20, “Thou shalt not
take the name of the Lord thy
God ir vain.’’ If this person
knowlingly and deliberately does
so. she is not only transgress
ing the law, but she is doing it
deliberately. This is the most
aggravated kind of sinning.
On the other hand, it is barely
possible that such a person is
not aware of what is taking pl
ace and gives no thought to her
words. Even so. it would be a
very serious thing and not to
be taken lightly. But if this is
the case, we had better be care
ful in condemning such a person.
It may be only a demonstration
of ignorance. For such people we
need to pray that they will be
come aware of the use of
words and the effect they have
on other people.

Jesus said to them the people,
“I am the bread of life; he who
comes to me shall not hunger,
and he who believes in me shall
never thirst." (John 6:35, RSV)
PRAYER: Restore unto us the
joy of Thy Salvation. O Lord.
Feed us with the living word so
that we shall hunger no more.
Give us of the water of life that
it may become in us a well of
water springing up into everlast
ing life. In the Master's name.
Amen.

WORLD ALMANAC
FACTS
The phrase “get down to
brass tacks,” meaning get
to facts and realities, may
have originated at the but
tons and bows department
of the old general store,
The World Almanac notes.
To measure cloth, which
came in bolts, brass tacks
were nailed into the coun
ter to mark an exact yard,
and customers told clerks:
“Don’t hold it up and guess.
Get down to brass tacks.”
