Thurmond, Kennedy
Have Word Battle
By ROY McGHEE
WASHINGTON (UPI) —Sen.
Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.,
stood listening near the front oi
the Senate. Sen. Strom TTiur
mond, R-S.C., was delivering a
prepared speech criticizing
Supreme Court Justice William
O. Douglas.
The two senators, one 36, the
other 66, were almost alone.
The gallery was deserted. The
session was almost over for the
day. Then it happened.
Thurmond had been speaking
about the Inter-American Cen

Studies of which Douglas was a
board member. When he got to
the name of Latin politician
Jose Figueres, he stopped,

Kennedy pronounced ft for
him.
Then, midst shouting and
desk-pounding, the following
colloquy took place:
Kennedy—Mr. President, will
the senator yield? I have some
familiarity with the individuals
about whom he s talking.
Thurmond—l will be glad to.
One of Mr. Figueres’ suppor

Kennedy—No. I am able to

Thurmond—Are you trying to
correct my pronounciation in
English, or are you holding
yourself up as an English
teacher? Are you an expert
because you went to Harvard?
What was your record at
Harvard?
(It was an obvious reference
to a cribbing Incident Kennedy
was involved in while an
undergraduate.) Thurmond con
tinued his speech until Kennedy
interrupted again.
Kennedy—Would the senator
tell us a little bit about that
center—what kind of students

Thurmond—The senator from

Senate what he pleases.

Douglas which I think demands
that he resign. If the senator
wants to defend Justice Dou
glas or say anything else on
this subject, he has a right to
do so when I finish.
Thurmond said Douglas had
taken an active part in the
Inter-American Center, an or
ganization financed by the
Parvin Foundation of which
Douglas was an officer.
Thurmond—Therefore, for a
Justice of the Supreme Court to
become associated with a
foundation which is financing
an organization in South
America, and take an active
part in it, can only create
controversy, and involve the
United States Supreme Court
Justice in an organization that
in turn brought about criticism,
as I said earlier, of the
President of the United States,
the foreign policies of the
United States and attack upon
the United States.

Rainy Night Killer
Strikes In Michigan
By JANE K. DENISON
ANN ARBOR. M’eh. (UPI)—
A pretty brunette with a gaily
striped coat was shot, stabbed
and raped before her ki:’?r left
her in a cold spring rain. She
was the sixth young woman
slain in the area of this fear
stricken university community
over the past two years.
Her death was called by a
sheriff “a carbon copy of the
others.”
She lay today in the
Washtenaw County morgue as
baffled police sought her
identity and clues to her death
and the other unsolved slayings.
The discovery of her body
Monday brought to four the
number of similar unsolved
murders since March 21.
Sheriff Douglas Harvey '’aid
the latest murder contained
“many similarities" to the
previous killings in this Univer
sity of Michigan city 45 miles
west of Detroit. But Harvey
declined to speculate wnether
the slayings were the work of a
single rainy-night killer.
“They were females, they
were stabbed,” he said. “We’re
grabbing at straws. Ail were
slain on rainy nights.”
“Hey Mister"
“Hey mister, hey mister,”
three teen-aged brothers yelled
Monday at Dale Higley, 41, at
his home about seven miles
north of here. “We found a
body. We found a body. ’
„ Higley said they found the
nearly nude body of the 17- to
20-year-old girl Monday after
noon behind a small buss on an
