The moon Is between Its last
quarter and new phase.
The morning stars are
Mercury, Venus and Saturn.
Tlie evening stars are Mars
and Jupiter.
On this day in history:
In 1630 the first governor of
ti e Massachusetts Bay Colony,
John Winthrop, entered the
harbor at Salem.
In 1924 President Calvin
Coolidge received the presiden
tial nomination at the Republi

Cleveland.
In 1963 a sniper killed Negro

Thought For Today
A thought for the day: Plato
said, "No evil can happen to a
good man, either in life or after
death.”
Young people
can speak out
A meeting has been planned for Tuesday
night in the auditorium of the City Hall to
give youth of the community an opportun
ity to air their views on matters concerning
them.
City Juvenile Officer Homer Williams,
who has been working with the youth of the
community for many years, was respons
ible for the meeting. It is sponsored by the
Griffin Police Department. Williams was
named juvenile officer earlier this year.
The youth of today say that they have
trouble "communicating" with people
"over thirty." Here is an opportunity for
them to communicate among themselves
and with people over 30.
Not only have young people been invited,
but also all persons interested in the youth.
Mr. Williams has specified that the meet
ing will not be to settle arguments or solve
problems. However, he may be able to re
fer some people's problems to someone
who can help.
He is in contact with city and county offi
cials and department heads. He stressed
that he w'ould try his best to get action on
important matters.
Officers Williams has the backing of the
Police Department in his endeavor. He also
is going to need the backing of the com
munity to keep the discussions going. He
is planning a series of the youth discus
sion nights.
Officer Williams has proven himself to
the youth of the community many times.
Here is a chance for them to prove them
selves to him by attending the discussions.

Human interest is where you find it, even in the straight
business news reporting of the Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper noted these developments in a recent
issue:
• Because of a shortage of stewardesses, airlines are
beginning to feel the pinch. Which is a switch, to say the
least.
• A generation that is fascinated with drugs is produc
ing fewer druggists. Not only ia the drug counter hard to
find in a modem drug store but store owners are find : ng
it hard to get anyone to work behind the counter.
• Playboy Club Bunnies in Chicago are wrestling with
their employers over a new contract. A representative of
the Hotel and Restaurant Employes Union predicts seme
“very tough marathon sessions.” This could be the most
interesting labor-management struggle in history.

MY A
ANSWER TO
Honest Man
Do you believe there is any
such thing as an honest man?
If so, what are his traits? K.R.
When a man says, "I don’t be
lieve there are any honest
men," he is merely confessing
that he Isn’t one of them.
Honesty needs no definition.
Even a child knows what hon
esty Is. It is being free from
deceit, and filled with integrity.
Shakespeare said, "No leg
acy is as rich as honesty." He
also said, "To be honest, as this
world goes, is to be a man pick
ed out of ten thousand.”
The Bible teaches that every
“natural” man tends to life. . .
and that our hearts are "deceit
ful.”
B-’t. the simple fact is this:
we can’t all be clever, or crea
tive, or gifted, but we can all be
honest. It lies within the provin
ce of every man, regardless of
race, color, or age to be trust
worthy. But, again, history and
our nature are against us. Only
one Man who walked the earth
was perfectly honest. He promis
ed those who followed Him the
strength and power to overcome
this world of dishonesty and de
ceit. The only way to be honest
is to let Him be Lord of your
life.
Che Upper Roonufo;
"I tell you, Love your enem
ies, and pray for those who per
secute you, so that you may be
sons of your Heavenly Father.”
(Matthew 5:44, Phillips)
PRAYER: O God, our Father,
forgive us for failing to act with
love and compassion towards
those who are different from
us. Today we would pray for
them with true concern. For
give our selfishness and use us
to help bring Your peace to the
world. In Jesus' name we
pray. Amen.
WORLD ALMANAC
FACTS
JEM
Poets usually claim to
have been deeply influ
enced in their youth by
Homer, Dante or Shake
speare. The World Almanac
notes. England’s poet laure
ate, Lord Tennyson, was
once asked, “What was the
poetry which first re
vealed yourself to your
self?” The laureate, who
had at age 12 written a
6,000-line epic, thought a
moment and retorted: “My
own, at the age of five.”
