Baptist Compromise
On Resolutions
NEW ORLEANS (UPI) —The
overwhelmingly conservatl v e
Southern Baptist Convention re
fused to adopt a series of rec
ommendations condemning ex
tremism on both the right and
left.
Some convention officials said
the recommendations failed to
win approval Friday because
they branded as extreme sever-
al rightist positions considered
by many of the convention’s
16,000 delegates to be moderate.
The recommendations were
part of a report submitted by
the Christian Life Commission
during the convention’s annual
meeting.
Delegates voted to accept the
report, which denounced all ex
tremism. However, they deleted
the 12 recommendations which
accompanied the report and
were intended to implement it.
This was seen as a compro
mise between two groups of
delegates — the majority who
supported religious fundamen
talism and social conservatism
throughout the meeting, and a
much smaller and more liberal
group that supports a more re
laxed theology and increased
social and political involvement.
Action on the extremism issue
was the last major Item of
business for the convention be
fore it adjourned Friday night.
The body represents some 11.3
million Southern Baptists.
The successful motion to de
lete the report’s recommenda
tions was offered by Richard
Barrett, a layman from Pela
hatchie, Miss., who described
himself as a Vietnam war vet
eran.
Barrett said he did not think
someone should be labeled an
extremist if he “takes a stand
against godless communism.”
Among the rejected recom
mendations were those calling
on the convention to:
—Study the tactics and goals
of "extreme forces, left and
right, in the church and society,
which if allowed to go unchal
lenged will divide us and ulti
mately take us down the dread
ful road to ruin.”
Be Informed of the identi
ties, tactics and goals of major
extremist groups.
Become involved "in solv
ing the complex moral econom
ic, political and social problems
which continue to plague multi
tudes of our citizens...”
