POLLY’S POINTERS
Saved Shower-Gift Bows
To Decorate Their Tree
By POLLY CRAMER
DEAR POLLY—My Pointer is for those girls who will be
getting married this summer or fall and be having a first
Christmas with a new husband. I saved all the white bows
from my shower and wedding gifts and used them to dec
orate our first tree. Thin, pliable wire was twisted through
the center of each bow, then twisted around a tree branch.
We added tiny twinkle lights which reflected colors off the
white bows and tinsel icicIes.—VICTORIA
DEAR POLLY—When cleaning house today I noticed my
smart big paper flowers
were droopy and out of
shape. I sprayed them with
hair spray until nice and
moist, set them in separate
jars to dry, reshaped and
straightened the drooping
petals and now they are
crisp, perky and shapely.—
MRS. H. H.
DEAR POLLY—Put a
strong rubber band length-
wise around your paint can
when painting so the band will make a bridge across the
top. Use this band for wiping excess paint off the brush as
you work. The sides and top of the can will stay cleaner.
When painting a ceiling, take half an old rubber ball and
cut a hole in the bottom. Put the handle of the brush
through this hole and the paint will run into the rubber
cup rather than down the handIe.— MARYBELLE

BETTY CANARY
We Goof but Don’t
Sell U.S. Short
>, BETTY CANARY
If more than two people get together any more, the con
versation turns to those U.S. citizens who have emigrated
to Canada. Not the young men who find serving in the
Army to be against tneir principles. We’re talking about
the solid-citizen, money-in-the-bank sort of people who have
been quoted recently as saying, among other things, that
they no longer find this a free country, a place where they,
in good conscience, can live.
Personally, I wish the emigrants Godspeed and a happy
life in the North. But, I do believe they are just a bit
premature in writing off this country.
Even after this past discordant decade, I can’t see the
American public image as all bad.
We keep hearing about the Naive American and the Ugly
American and the Fast-Buck American. Then, of course,
there’s the Patronizing American. I suppose I’ve met at
least one representative of each group but I’m not yet
ready to say the American Dream has turned into a night
mare.
Actually, I’ve always believed having room for these
types—plus a few thousand more—was what the United
States is all about.
Besides, none of them is a Typical American. Neither is
the one referred to as a money-grubber or the one called
“vicious industrialist” or even the flag-waver. The picture
drawn of the wife-swapping, alcoholic, pseudosophisticate
is hardly that of the Typical Amercian. We aren’t all
racists, neither are we revolutionaries. The T.A. simply
cannot be struck from any one mold.
The one thing we seem to have in common is a penchant
for name-calling. If there is a characteristic trait, it might
well be the belief that each person knows best what is good
for the country.
The results are confusion and turmoil at times but there
is also awareness of our faults and a determination to cor
rect them. Some of our mistakes have surely been appalling
and we have apologized by taking action to eliminate them.
Some mistakes have been amusing and we could afford to
laugh at ourselves.
To those who tell me we’re on the eve of destruction, I
answer that the shake-up in national morals we’ve had
indicates the dawn of a new era.
To those who tell me they’re on their way to Canada,
I can only say I’ve found that country a terrific place to
visit, but I’d much rather live here.

Clean Those Filters
Most new air conditioners
have permanent filters which
don’t need to be replaced,
but do need to be kept clean.
The method is to lift the fil
ter out, shake off loose dust,
then dip it up and down in
hot sudsy water. This loosens
and removes the greasy soot
which the filter has captured.
Rinse, dry and apply a coat
of special filter oil to help
“trap” and hold the next
batch of soil.

Color goes on the bold
standard for fall footwear. The
National Footwear Institute says
that brown in all tones comes on
strong. But look for mariner and
navy blues, the ultraviolets, the
deep reds, the tones of wine or

What is fashion? Today, it is
the “spirit to understand, to
capture, that women have to
make their own and adapt to
their personality, physically and
psychologically,” says designer
Philippe Heim. “Too many
women make wrong choices
because they just copy other
women, without thinking. So,
they can be seen wearing the
wrong fancy stockings, with the
wrong hemline, the wrong fabric
or colors, the wrong hairdo. Says
Heim, “Their elegance is a
failure, because they are
unconscious about what is right
or not.”

Switch to a
flameless electric heat pump
Most people feel that spring is the beautiful
season. But summer has a certain coziness.
Fall a sparkle. Winter a bright tang.
The electric heat pump lets you make the
climate you want. You just set the
thermostat. From then on, the heat pump
automatically cools or heats, filters or
dehumidifies, as needed. Season to season,
hour to hour. So you can be warm, but not
stuffy. Cool, but not damp. Comfortable,
but not aware of temperature. *
What’s more, all this can be guaranteed under
our economical service plan, through 10 full
years, parts and labor included.
So if a summer afternoon grinds to a baking
halt, or winter evenings bite at your sleeves, »
escape. To the great fresh indoors. And the
perfect climate of the electric heat pump.
