Almanac
For
Today
By United Press International
Today is Tuesday, July 22,
the 203rd day of 1969 with 162
to follow.
The moon is in its first
quarter.
The morning stars are
Mercury, Venus and Saturn.
The evening stars are Mars
and Jupiter.
On this day In history:
In 1864 Confederate troops
under General John Hood were
defeated by General William
Sherman's Union forces in the
Battle of Atlanta.
In 1912 Congress passed the
Home Loan Bank Act, provid
ing federal funds to private
mortgage-lending Institution*.
In 1934 notorious gangster
John Dillinger was killed when
27 FBI men trapped him
coming out of a Chicago
theater.
In 1944 delegates from 44
nations to the UN Monetary
and Financial Conference ap
proved an international recon
structlo bank with capital of
more than nine billion dollars.
A thought for the day:
American philosopher William
James said: "Do not be afraid
of life. Believe that life Is worth
living and your belief will help
create that fact."

Meanwhile,
back on earth—
The moonflight has proven that Ameri
cans working together can accomplish any
thing. Individually, and as a country, we
are proud of the success of the space pro
gram, of our astronauts, of the men and
women behind them, and of the great na
tion which put it all together.
Meanwhile, back on planet earth in
general, even right here in Griffin and
Spalding County, we have:
• Suffering and misery, both mental and
physical;
• Ignorance, prejudice and hatred;
• Malnutrition, parasites in children as
well as adults, hungry babies;
• Crime and corruption;
• Decaying morality and complete im
morality;
- and all the rest of the faults of the world
and of mankind.
There is much wrong with the world, but
there is much right with it too. Americans,
including Griffin and Spalding County,
are making great strides and curing the
sick, eliminating evils which have beset
mankind since the earliest days, and im
proving the lot of everyone.
Our astronauts have conquered space,
but there are other worlds yet to conquer
without ever leaving the planet earth - or
the city limits of Griffin or the county lines
of Spalding, for that matter.
Passing of Penny Arcade
Score one more for inflation.
The galloping increase in the cost of amusement as well
as living, has done in another great American institution—

one that charges a nickel. H y
Appropriately enough, it’s a fortune teller.
Fair Notice To
Georgia Parents
THE WINDER NEWS
FAIR NOTICE has been given parents
of elementary school students by state (
education and public health officials to 1
have their children immunized against 1
six diseases by next fall or face the
probability of not having their children
being admitted to school.
1 ast year, the General Assembly pas
sed a law prohibiting admission by Georg
ia public schools to any child not having
certification of immunization against
diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, mea
sles, smallpox and polio.
Dr. Jack Nix, state school superin
tendent, and Dr. John H. Venable, state
director of public health, estimate that i
half of the 120,000 children enrolled in
public schools for the first time last
September were accepted on the basis
of “provisional certificates” of im
munization -- good for one year only.
Next September when the new school •
term begins, all children must present
immunization certificates before they
can be enrolled.
I’he law is a sensible one. It pro
tects not only the individual child, but
fellow students as well from contagious ,
diseases.
Parents are being advised in ample
time of provisions of the law. There will
be no excuse for laxity on the part of
parents failing to take steps to protect '
children from the diseases mentioned, and
qualify their children for school.

REPARATIONS!"

ANSWER
I have a wonderful mother
have a perfect understanding,
and I am most happy when I am
with her. Because of this I have
never married. But, now that I
am beginning to wonder if we
have both made a mistake. My
friends hav e families, and Jt
seems that the world has almost
passed me by. Have you any ad
vice? H.S.
A wise man once spoke of the
“robber-hood of motherhood,”
and I think he had a point. A
wise mother knows when to br
eak the "apron strings”, and
let her son become a man. To
rob him of his masculinity with
that "mother-knows-best” philo
sophy can become social larceny.
Even the animals realise they
can’t keep their young forever,
and they wisely thrust them out
into the world, on their own.
This is a law of life and it
should not be broken, even by
well-intentioned, but misguided
mothers. Mothers shouldn’t
“smother” their children's fr
iendships and normal alliances.
Even the Bible says, "There
fore shall a man leave his fath
er and mother, and shall clea
ve to bis wife.” It is all right for
a man to be a bachelor if be so
desires, but to be a masculine
man, be must not allow his mo
ther, no matter how lovely, to
keep him tied to her apron st
rings.
THOUGHTS
If I give away all I have,
and if I deliver my body to
be burned, but have not
love, I gain nothing.—l Cor.
13:3.
