Retired Vice Admiral
Fights For ‘Big Mo’
By MICHAEL FLYNN
BREMERTON, WASH. (UPI)
— A retired navy vice admiral
and a onetime candidate for
mayor of Seattle, Wash., have
collaborated on a book designed
to attract public attention to the
U.S.S. Missouri, whose decks
served as the stage for the
Japanese surrender in 1945.
Now, nearly 24 years after
the surrender document was
signed, the “Mighty Mo” stands
deteriorating at the Bremerton
Navy Yard.
In the years since the
battlewagon was placed in
mothballs, the deck considered
by many a national shrine has
grown dirty, the teakwood has
been splashed with paint and the
plaque commemorating the
surrender ceremony has
corroded.
But despite the fact that the
Missouri has been out of the
public eye since her
decommissioning in 1955, more
than 200,000 persons found
their way to her last year for a
look at “the last battleship.”
Gordon Newell, an Olympia,
Wash., maritime historian and
once a Seattle political figure,
and retired Vice Admiral Allen
E. Smith have joined forces io
produce “The U.S.S. Missouri, a
Biography of the Last
Battleship.”
But in putting together what
they describe as the first
publication dedicated entirely to
the “Mighty Mo,” Newell and
Smith may help direct as much
attention to her present
condition as to her history.
“It’s sad the way that ship,
which is really a national shrine,
has been allowed to
deteriorate,” Newell said.
Steps Promised
He said a letter Smith sent to
the Chief of Naval Operations
has brought a promise by the
Navy Department that steps will
be taken to restore the Missouri
to “the place she should hold.”
The book compiled by
Newell and Smith is scheduled
for publication Sept. 2, the 24th
anniversary of the signing
ceremony on the Missouri’s
deck.
It recounts the life of the
Missouri from her launching in
early 1944 to the present and
dwells at length on the surrender
ceremony, which was her
proudest moment, and her
grounding on Chesapeake Bav in
1950, her most embarrassin
moment.
The Missouri was Smith’s
flagship for a time in the Korean
conflict, during part of which he
served as commander of the
United Nations Blockading and
Escort Force.
Newell’s growing reputation
as a maritime historian
developed despite the fact that
the closest he came to going to
sea was as an officer in the old
Seacoast Artillery in the years
leading up to World War 11.
The story of the Missouri is
Newell’s 15th book. Most of his
publications have dealt with
ships and the sea.
Smith’s contacts with the
Missouri have been frequent
during his long career, which
included a tour as commander of
the battleship South Dakota and
another as acting president of
the Naval War College.
Smith was in charge of
salvage operations for the
Missouri after the battlewagon
went aground. It was one of the
greatest salvage operations in
history.
