Outstanding Airman of the Mon
th in his unit at Andersen AFB,
Guam. Airman Branan, a secur
ity policeman, was selected for
his exemplary conduct and duty
performance. He is in a unit of
the Strategic Air Command.

completed basic training at
Lackland AFB, Tex. He has been

enlisted for four years with the
United States Air Force. He will
leave July 31 for Lackland Air
Force Base, Tex., for six weeks
of basic training. He will enter
the administrative field. Moore,
a 1969 graduuate of Griffin High
School, is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl F. Moore of 1704 West
Poplar street. Sgt. Paul Norton
and Sgt. Willie Duncan are his
recruiting officers from the Grif
fin area.

Specialist Four Eddie J. Phe
lps, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed
die L. Phelps of Hampton, re
ceived the Army commendation
medal while serving with the
101st Airborne Division in Viet
nam. Spec. 4 Phelps earned the
award for meritorious service as
a mail clerk with Company A
of the division’s 159th Assault
Support Helicopter Battalion
near Phu Bai.

Kenneth R. Cochran (r) of Griffin, a st ident et the U. S. Army Primary Heli
conter School at Fort Walters, Tex., has been promoted to Cantain. Cant Jerry
Wright, section leader, pins the new insignia of rank on Capt. Cochran’s flight cap.
Capt. Cochran will report to Fort Rucker, Ala. in October for advanced training.
He is the son of Joseph L. Cochran of Griffin and is married to the former Sandra
Turner of Griffin.

ing hole in the pavement caused
by a sewer collapse uncovered
an old place known as Uhrig’s
Cave, an underground beer par
lor and beer cooling cave in
operation from the 1880a to the
early 1900 s.
Ignate Uh rig and his brothers
enlarged die place from a smal
ler cavern to complement dieir
brewery. At one time the cave
measured 210 feet long, 20 feet
wide and 20 feet deep.
