Record-O-F one Is Cards Hot-Line To The Minors
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—(NEA)—
The St. Louis Cardinals are
now being aided by a 10th
player. The phantom per
former who never gets into
a uniform is an automated
telephone answering system.
Convinced that instant re
ports from its farm clubs
provide a day-by-day aware
ness of available reserves,
the Cards’ management has
installed a Record-O-Fone to
get daily accounts of farm
club games.
The farm managers call in
their summaries, which av
erage about two minutes,
after each game. This gives
the front office immediate
knowledge about the players

Also, using a special “Tele

anywhere on the road by
merely calling their St. Louis
office and having it activate
the telephone answering ser

A sample of these reports
are:
Warren Spahn reporting
for Tulsa from Denver: “De
feated Denver by the score
of 8 to 2. Guzman pitched 6
innings, did not throw very
many pitches hard, gave us
two hits in seventh with no
outs; relieved by Andy Mar
tin, who struck out Jenkins,
Holt popped up, Ron Clark

and the $17,850 first prize mon
ey would put him nearly $2,000
above the $136,700 Cale won
last year, another record.
Both Cale and Lee Roy will
be driving Ford products with
the big new engine that has
proven unbeatable this year on
the super speedway tracks.
In recent years, Cale has
been the top driver at Atlanta
and once again is favored. He
has won the past three Atlanta
500 races in March.
If the Yarb(o)roughs are the
drivers to beat Sunday after-
Warren Spahn
- noon, another Ford driver,
) Richard Petty, must be consid
-1 ered the third favorite.
A win by Petty, of Randle-
I man, N.C. would be his 100th
i victory on the NASCAR circuit,
i a feat never before accom
i polished. He won two races in
just 18 hours this past weekend,
; starting with the Nashville race
Saturday, then coming back for
his almost unprecedented doub
le with a victory at Maryville,
Tenn. Sunday.
Petty now has won the most
races in a season (27 in 1967)

Ray Hathaway reporting
for Little Rock: “Defeated
Dallas-Fort Worth, 8 to 6.
Cleveland picked up his 7th
win, though not usual self—

off. Cruz lacking hitting abil

ing at pitches when very
wide of the plate. Murphy
hitting to all fields, double
off fence in left, triple deep
right center—this is the best
he had looked for some time.
Coulter tripled off top of
and the most consecutive vic
tories (10 that same year). His
$653,099 is the highest amount
ever won in a career in
NASCAR history.
Lee Roy got a jump on most
of the other entrants In Sun
day’s race, arriving here Mon
day afternoon.
He said his emergence to ,
challenge the Cale Yarborough
supremacy has been the result ■
of "working harder and trying
harder.”
Another top stock driver,
Charlie Glotzbach, showed up
unexpectedly Monday—but with- i
out a ride in Sunday’s race. He
held out l ope that he would be I
able to get a ride in either Ray
Fox’s Dodge or the factory 1
Ford prepared by Smokey Yu
nick.
Glotzbach quit the NASCAR ‘
circuit earlier this season in a
huff, severing relations with 1
Cotton Owens, the man who
had prepared “Chargin’ Char- I
lie’s” Dodge.
Glotzbach admittedly wants
to race Sunday, but said he will 1
settle for nothing but a good
car, meaning either Fox’s or 1
Yunick’s, he said.
Petty’s victories have built,
his point standing to 2,431, sec- 1
ond to the 2,574 points held by
Pearson. Both men are two- 1
time grand national champions.

In my opinion, he’s the best
