is receiving basic training at

GOP Leaders Say
Citizens Oppose
School Close Threat

ATLANTA (UPI) — Republi
can Director Alex Hodges, Just
back from a statewide tour,
said Wednesday that most
Georgians would rather have
school desegregation administ
ered by the Justice Department
than by the Department of
Health, Education and Welfare
(HEW).
But Hodges and GOP Chair
man Wiley Wasden both said
voters around the state are op
posed to Gov. Lester Maddox's
threat to close state schools
rather than follow federal de
segregation guidelines.
“I think most Georgians want
to keep our schools open,”
Hodges said at a news confer
ence. “I don’t think they want
Lester’s approach to the school
desegregation problem, he said.
The Republican leaders said
they found widespread resent
ment toward HEW. Hodges said
he and most Georgians he
talked to were in support of a
move by GOP Congressman
Fletcher Thompson of Atlanta
to impeach HEW Secretary
Robert Finch.
“I would say that I would be
happy to see the school system
or problem put in the Justice
Department or NATO or the
Post Office Department or any
where but HEW,” Hodges said.
He was referring to a recent
threat by the Justice Depart
ment to take the state into fed
eral court unless Georgia sub
mitted a statewide school de
segregation plan.
