Moon Photographs
Entrance Viewers
By AL ROSSITER Jr.
UPI Space Writer
SPACE CENTER, Houston
(UPI) — Spectacular photo
graphs of the surface of the
moon entranced earthbound
viewers Thursday night while
the men who took them—
America’s pioneering lunar
explorers, began the last half of
their 21 days in isolation.
In one of the most fascinating
pictures, Neil A. Armstrong
snapped Edwin E. Aldrin
standing in a shallow crater, its
soil swept by the exhaust of
their landing rocket.
The knees of Aldrin’s pres
sure suit were smudged with
moon dirt, and reflecting in his
golden-faced visor were the
white outlines of Armstrong,
the landing craft Eagle, the
American flag and one of the
scientific experiments they set
up.
The photogranhers them
selves, and Michael Collins,
who piloted the command
module, Columbia, were sche
duled to be released from their
quarantine in the Lunar Receiv
ing Laboratory Aug. 11.
Doctors Watch Mice
But doctors carefully watched
a colony of mice injected with
lunar dust for any signs of a
moon disease that might extend
the quarantine.
The next 24 hours will be
critical for the white mice, the
first living things to be injected
with matter gathered by men
from a celestial body other

than earth, to see if the
material harbors dangerous
germs or poisonous chemicals.
Doctors said all signs indicate
the astronauts would be in top
physical condition by the Aug.
11 date and could leave the
quarantine module.
Richard Underwood, chief of
photo operations at the Manned
Spacecraft Center said the
moon pictures left him speech
less when they rolled out of the
processing machine.
’’They are the best photogra
phers yet on a lunar flight, and
probably on any flight,” Under
wood said of Apollo H’s
astronauts.
Shows Craters
One of the photographs
showed craters as small as a
dime so clearly it looked like
freshly plowed farm soil pitted
by a brief rain shower.
A 150-foot strip of motion
picture film released along with
the 34 still photographs showed
Eagle rising from the moon and
flying to a rendezvous with
Collins in the Columbia.
As Eagle maneuvered for
docking, the blue and white
earth a quarter of a million
miles away rose over the
moon’s horizon between the two
spacecraft.
The health of the three
astronauts will be the principal
factor in determining if they
are fit for release from
quarantine in 10 days, but
officials said the isolation could
be extended if the lunar
material produces disease in
the mice.

Sensitivity to Sunburn
Increased by Drug Use
By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT, M.D.
Everyone who tries to
avoid sunburn is not aware
that some drugs, when used
regularly, may increase the
sensitivity of the skin to sun
light. This photosensitivity
has been classified as either
phototoxic or photoallergic.
This first may be induced by
the tranquilizer, Thorazine;
the antibiotics, Declomycin
and Declostatin; and the
sulfa drugs. Persons taking
these drugs are in no danger
if the sunlight strikes them
through window glass. When
lesions do occur, they re
semble sunburn and may re
sult tn blistering and peel
ing.
Photoallergic reactions
may be induced by the diu
retics, Anhydron, Diamox,
Diuril, Esidrex, Exna, Hy
drodiuril, Hydromox Hygro
ton, Naqua, Natyretin, Ore
tic, Renese and Saluron; the
fungicides, Fulvicin, Griful
vin, Grisactin and Griseoful
vin; the antihistamines, Me
pergan, Phenergan and Sy
nalg os; the antidiabetic
agents, Diabinese and Ori
nase; miscellaneous drugs
that contain aminobenzoic
acid, such as Cardenz,
Chenatal, Neocylone, Neocy
ten, Pabalate, Pabirin and
P-B-Sal; and the externally
applied antiseptic, Impregon.
Persons taking these drugs
may get an allergic reaction
(sneezing or hives) when-

is expected in the future. This
is brought about by the continu

frigeration equipment.
Applications are being taken
for this course and in all train
ing areas for the fall quarter,

Camp Thunder
Rated As Tops
Camp Thunder was checked
by a team of Inspectors repre
senting the Southeastern region
in the Boy Scouts and was giv
en one of the highest grades that
it or any other camp has ever
received, a grade of A-99.
All Scout Camps are scored on
a grading plan known as the par
100 on which there are 100 items
to be scored. Os these 100 Items,
71 are starred and must be scor
ed in the affirmative in order for
an A to be received by the
camp.

Q—l gag after every meal.
What causes this? A Nalde
con tablet before breakfast
helps a little. Should I keep
taking this drug indefinitely?
A—ln gagging, forcible
contractions of the stomach,
diaphragm and abdominal
muscles stop just short of
vomiting. In the morning,
this is usually caused by
thick mucus in the back of
the throat that is hard to dis
lodge. It may also be caused
by a nasal polyp and is of
ten associated with chronic
sinusitis with its accompany
ing postnasal drip.
Naldecon is a combination
of several drugs for the re
lief of nasal congestion. It
may cause slight drowsiness
and should not be taken by
anyone with high blood pres
sure, an overactive thyroid,
diabetes or heart disease.
Perhaps if you drink a glass
of water when you first get
up and avoid very dry indoor
air, you will find less need
-to use this drug.
