Miss Beineman was the

this twin city-university area of
Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti.
She was last seen speeding
away from a Ypsilanti wig shop
on the back of a big, shiny
motorcycle driven by a tall,
dark-haired young man.
Collins is known among his
friends as a “motorcycle nut”
who reportedly owned more
than one big bike. The one on
which he was most .frequently
seen in the Ypsilanti area was
a blue Triumph—not the black
Honda 450 model reportedly
seen leaving the wig shop.
Collins’ friends were stunned
by the arrest and said they
doubted his guilt.

to do anything bad,’’ said
Barbara Stevens, 21, like

The New Mexico victim re

DAHLONEGA, Ga. (UPI) —
Fire destroyed two houses here
Friday night but Police Chief
Toy Jenkins said there was “no
way” the fires could be linked
to a string of apparent arsons
which this week brought
charges against three city offi

Flames swept through two
homes on the North Georgia
College campus. On the scene
was a state fire marshal from
Gainesville, 1 ut Jenkins said his
appearance was “routine.”
The city no longer has a fire
chief. The former chief, John
N. Porter, was dismissed ear
lier this week by the city coun
cil after he was slapped with
arson charges. Also charged
were City Clerk Virginia Bruce
and Assistant Water Supt.
Howard Green.
They are all out on bond
along with three policemen,
William A. Proctor, Charles
Duncan, and Larry Rex Skin

connection with a recent string
of fires, one of which destroyed
city hall.
Officials said no injuries were

Kennedy pleaded guilty last

YOUR DENTAL HEALTH
Gumboil Is Sign
Tooth Is Abscessed
By WILLIAM LAWRENCE, D.D.S.
DEAR DR. LAWRENCE:
When my son was 2, he fell
and chipped two upper front
teeth. He’s 5 now, and our
dentist found a gumboil over
one tooth. He wants to ex
tract the tooth but my son
says it doesn’t hurt and the
gumboil seems to have dis
appeared. Is it really neces
sary to extract the tooth?—
Mrs. Jean H.
ANSWER: Your dentist’s
judgment is correct. A gum
boil means the tooth is ab
scessed and abscessed baby
teeth should be extracted for
two main reasons: (1) to rid
the body of infection; (2) to
prevent possible damage to
the permanent tooth that lies
beneath it.
There’s no reason not to
extract it, unless it’s contra
indicated by your son’s
mental or physical condition
at this time. Os course, he’ll
look funny when he smiles
and shows a gap in front of
his mouth, but at age 5: it’s a
normal show.
You mentioned that the
gumboil seems to have dis
appeared. Outwardly it may
seem to have cleared up but
the cause of infection is still
there and can only be proper
ly eliminated by removing
the tooth. Gumboils some
times drain and heal only to
break down soon again, re
peating the process often.

My son, 5, had to have a
baby molar removed be
cause of an abscess. The
dentist wants to put a spacer
in its place. Is that im
portant?—Mrs. Shirley F.
ANSWER: When baby
teeth are lost before their
normal time, and many
years remain before perma
nent teeth erupt, it’s often
necessary to “maintain the
space” left by the extrac
tions. If not, the tooth be
hind the space tends to move
forward into it and may
block the permanent tooth
from coming up into normal
position, or even prevent it
from coming up at all. It
may remain embedded in
the jawbone.
“Spacers” are simple
orthodontic appliances, con
sisting of a metal band with
attached wire which is
cemented onto the tooth be
hind the space, the wire en
gaging the tooth in front of
the space. It’s full name is
space maintainer and its
function is just that: it main
tains space left by the ex
traction until the permanent
tooth comes up to fill it.
