Dixie 500 Race
HAMPTON, Ga. (UPD—Rain
was the only winner at the 10th
annual Dixie 500 stock car race.
A stead cool storm washed
out the scheduled super speed
way event Sunday. The race
was rescheduled for Aug. 10 at
1 p.m.
While the 40 entered cars
were removed from their
starting points and Impounded
by NASCAR officials, two
youths swam in a muddy
water-filled hole in the infield.
Despite the weather approxi
mately 20,000 optimistic fans
were at the Atlanta Internation
al Raceway Track when the
decision was made to postpone
the $100,315 event. Many cars,
mired in the muddy infield, had
to be removed by wrecker.
The stocks will not be moved
until the eve of the race when
officials will allow each car to

Beard Defeats
Georgia’s Greene

HARRISON, N.Y. (UPD—
Golf is strictly a business with
30-y?ar-o!d Frank Beard and
this year’s business is booming
to the tune of $155,187.79—p1us
a few extras that don't count in
the official prize money list.
Now the leading dollar
collector of the season, Beard
did $50,000 worth of business on
Sunday alone by popping in a
Dirdie putt on the 72nd hole of
the Westchester Classic for a
five-under-par 267 and one-shot
victory over 25-year-old Bert
Greene, who started the day
with a four-shot lead.
“It’s the only time I led,”
said Beard. "But it was the
right time, wasn’t it?”

and 4 p.m.
The sound-alike drivers, Cale
Yarborough and Lee Roy Yar
brough, will resume their duel
for supremacy. A victory here
for Lee Roy would be his fifth
on a big track this year—a rec
ord —and would give him at
least $138,000 in earnings, anoth
er record. Cale presently holds
both records.
Cale is the favorite here, and
captured the pole position with
a qualifying speed of 155.413
miles per hour, slightly ahead
of Lee Roy, who will start on
the outside pole.
Also seeking some glory will
be Richard Petty, whose next
victory will be his 100th In a
NASCAR event. Petty has been
running well here in practice
laps and had the third best
qualifying time.
Beard, winner of the Minne
sota Classic three weeks ago,
■ wound up with 275 —13 under
. par for the distance in the
$250,000 tournament that ranks
as the richest in the world.
Greene, son of a veteran
Georgia club pro, faded to a
, par 72 after three straight
, rounds in the 60s and wound up
second at 276, but his $28,500
prize was nearly as much as he
: had won previously in three
years on the tour,
Dan Sikes, who blew a three

third with a 69 for 277 and

Harold Henning looped in a long

Vince, Unitas
Back: 0.J.?
By U n ited Press International
Vince Lombardi and Johnny
Unitas are back—but O. J.
Simpson still hasn’t arrived in
the first place yet.
The two guys who were there
and the one who wasn’t
received the attention Saturday
night when the 1969 exhibition
schedule got into full swing
with five games after the New
York Jets kicked things off
Friday night by escaping with a
26-24 victory over the college
All-Stars.
Lombardi, who spent last
season in the front office at
Green Bay before going to
Washington to return to the
sidelines, made his debut in a
downpour at RFK Stadium. The
weather was awful but Lombar
di’s teams usually don’t let bad
weather bother them. They
didn’t this time, either, as the
Redskins sloshed to a 13-7
victory over the Chicago Bears.
Unitas, who sat out most of
last season with a bad elbow,
looked like the Unitas of old as
he saw a quarter of action in
the Baltimore Colts’ 26-6
victory over the San Diego
Chargers.

Slumping Braves
Let Crowd Gather
MONTREAL (UPI) — The
slumping Atlanta Braves have
let a crowd gather in the Na
tional League West penthouse
they have occupied by them
selves most of the season.
Meanwhile, Simpson was still
refusing to sign with the
Buffalo Bills—but his asking
price probably went up a bit
after the Bills’ pathetic ground
showing in a 24-7 loss to
Houston. The Bills gained just
23 yards rushing—and had a
grand total of minus two yards
in the second half. It looks like
the Bills are desperate for a
running back of Simpson’s
caliber.
In the other two games,
Kansas City edged Oakland, 23-
17, and Minnesota clobbered
Miami, 45-10. The Minnesota
and Baltimore victories gave
the NFL a 2-0 leeid in the
games between the two
leagues, but there are 31 games
left.
