If Life’s On Mars
It’s Different
PASADENA, Calif. (UPD—If
there is life on Mars, it is
chemically different from any
of the vegetable or animal life
known to man, according to a
preliminary analysis of data
recorded by Mariner 6.
Although Mariner 6 detected
water ice in the atmosphere
when it flew past the Red
Planet last week, it found no
evidence of nitrogen, an ele
ment present In every living
molecule on earth.
Mariner 7, the 850-pound
space twin of Mariner 6, was
due to swoop by the south polar
cap of Mars at 10 p.m. PDT
tonight at a distance of about
2,000 miles.

Last night Clara and Matilda watched TV,
baked brownies
and got a tan.
For about a nickel’s worth of electricity.
Seems the girls are saving for vacation. And
getting a head start. A couple of sessions with
the sunlamp costs one-third of a cent.
And they love watching television in the
evening. Four hours costs only two cents.
Matilda's pretty keen on brownies, so she
makes them often. For half a cent a batch.
Add the lights and refrigerator, and they’ve
spent about a nickel.
Clara keeps the books, so she knows: electricity
is inexpensive. And she could quote you
the figures. Georgia Power's average price for
residential use is just per kilowatt-hour.
That’s 23 percent below the national average.
The convenience convinces Matilda. Gives
her more time to do things in the evenings.
Like relax.
It’s a great way to save for a night on the town.

“Canals" Seem Settled
If the riddle of whether there
Is life on Mars remained
unanswered, the controversy
over the so-called Martian
“canals" seemed settled once
and for all.
Dr. Robert Leighton, head of
the photo analysis team for the
Mariner project, told newsmen
at Jet Propulsion Laboratory
during the weekend the canals
seem to be merely large,
irregular dark splotches with no
specific detail.
Murder Links I
Being Sought (
In California
YPSILANTI, Mich. (UPD—
Michigan authorities investiga
ting a series of brutal slayings
of coeds inthis university area
have flown to California to
check the possibility “someone
in Michigan may have been
involved" in a similar series of
deaths there.
Other detectives from the
crime center coordinating the
Michigan killings were seeking
possible links between John
Norman Collins, charged with
the latest of the deaths, and the
murder of Joan Schell near Ann
Arbor, Mich., last year.
Police in Salinas, Calif., had
contacted the center, saying
they were “suspicious that
someone in Michigan may have
been Involved” in the deaths of
three young women on the West
Coast, said Kurtis Stadtfeld,
director of public relations at
Eastern Michigan University
and a police spokesman.
Collins, a senior at EMU, was
charged Friday with first
degree murder in the strangling
death of Karen Sue Beineman,
18, a 96-pound freshman who
had been at EMU only one
month when she vanished.
Was Unrecognizable
Her nude body, beaten so
badly on the face and head she
was unrecognizable, was found
July 26 in a wooded gully
outside nearby Ann Arbor, the
home of the University of
Michigan and a twin campus
town to Ypsilanti.
Collins was arrested after his
uncle by marriage, State Police
Cpl. David Leik, returned with
his family from a vacation and
found bloodstains covered by
freshly sprayed black paint in
his basement. Crime laboratory
experts matched the flecks to
Miss Belneman’s blood type.
Italian astronomer Giovanni
Chiaparelll first reported seeing
the canals in 1877 and he drew
a picture showing a network of
lines over the Martian surface.
Chlaparelli’s canals were
discounted by almost everyone
except Science fiction writers,
although some observers theo
rized they were used to carry
water from the melting polar
cap to irrigate crops in
temperate regions of Mars.
When Mariner 7 sweeps past
the south polar cap tonight, the
infrared radiometer aboard will
undertake a thermal mapping
of the area to correlate
temperatures with surface vi
sual appearance and try to find
out what the cap is made of.
Snaps Final Series
Early today, Mariner 7 began
snapping its final series of "far
encounter” pictures of Mars as
it hurtled toward its rendezvous
with the planet. A total of 93
pictures were taken at distan
ces ranging from 1.14 million
miles away to 65,550 miles,
A spokesman at JPL said the
pictures from Mariner 7 are of
much better quality than those
snapped last week by Mariner
6. Scientists complained the
ones from Mariner 6 lacked
contrast, although they were
generally satisfied with the
quality.
Dr. George C. Pimentel, of
the University of California at
Berkeley, told newsmen Satur
day the infrared spectrometer
which measured the lower
atmosphere of Mars recorded
the spectrum of "water ice.”
“It seems unlikely that this
ice could be in the spectrome
ter —the only possible misinter
pretation—and we tentatively
attribute it to a very thin ice
fog.”
He said it was a "positive”
indicator Mars might support
life, although because of the
absence of nitrogen such life
would not be earth-like.
