Talmadge Home Scene Os Activities

Senator and Mrs. Hermar.
E. Talmadge live in an histori
cal home located on lands* situ
ated in both Clayton and Henry
Counties in the village of Love-
Joy.
The home has been the scene
of social and political functions
and contains early history of
the two families who have oc
cupied the residence since
1835 - the Crawfords and the
Talmadges.
The Clayton County Annual
published annually in 1893 de
scribed Lovejoy as being, “One
of the llvest and most pleasant
little villages on the Central
Railroad and Hie people are
prosperous and hospitable."
“This place was named after
old Mr. Lovejoy, a pioneer
citizen of the county, Ind his
bones rest in an obscure grave
in the town.”
The Talmadge Farm is lo
cated on a prosperous planta
tion region made famous during
the War between the States. It
was also noted in Margaret
Mitchell’s novel, “Gone With
The Wind." The house shaded
by oaks and cedars still exhi
bits a picture of the legendary
ante-bellum plantation.
Thomas Crawford acquired
the property in 1835 and the
home was plantation built, with
hand-hewn timbers and interior
woodword of heart pine.
In 1854, when the armies
fought at Jonesboro, and later
when Sherman began his march
to the sea, it was told that Mr.
Crawford filled the tall porch

Astronauts may be pretty
special people, but they’re
just folks when it comes to
getting hungry. But fear not,
a Shaker Heights, Ohio,
mother is seeing to it that
astronauts Armstrong,
Aldrin and Collins are want
ing for little in the food de

The lady’s name is Doris
Davis Santini, a mother of
three who found an interest
ing way to get her children
personally involved in the
moon mission.
“I’ve been feeding them
the meals the astronauts are
eating while in isolation in
the Lunar Research Labora

She made it sound simple
and for her it was.
As Doris Davis she’s man-

rounded by 1200 acres and a
lengthy - driveway through for
est and open fields leads to
the towering picturesque home.
Six fluted columns support
the broad two-story porches,
with a long hanging balcony
on. the second floor. This bal
cony remains as secure as when
it was built in 1835. Its hid
den beams run backward Into
the house where they provide
support for the upstairs rooms.
One could almost stand in
the shaded yard today and pic
ture the home surrounded by
cotton fields and imagine the
late Mrs. Crawford acting as
hostess to the young .people
who were guests at the large
parties held in that era.
Guests would come from tar

plantation and the parlor would
be cleared of furnishings for
the visitors to dance the co
tillion that was popular In the
early South.
Today the stately home stands
as a rememberance of Its past

Years ago--no one remembers

The firemen dipped into thier

-they didn’t care what color the
pumper was so long as it was the
most beautiful machine at the
fair.
They got a white engine with

termite
CHICAGO (UPI) - Some
creatures' are carnivorous, some
herbivorous, and now' there’s a
word for a pest which eats
neither meat nor plants and does
$250 million in damage annually
in the United Stated by literally
eating people out of house and
home.
The pest is the termite, which
dines on wood or cellulose
by-products of wood, and he’s
“ligniverous,” according to Dr.
David Watson, entomologist of
the Velsicol Chemical
Corporation, supplier of
pest-control chemicals.
Approximately 2 million
homes get termite treatment
each year in this country, and
Americans spend about $45
million in every state but Alaska
to keep termites in their place —
underground and out of
buildings.

development of his brain.
Many children with this type
of learning problem outgrow j

daughter should be seen by
a psychiatrically oriented
pediatrician or a psychiatrist
who treats children.
