Legion Play Opens Here
Five area championship base
ball teams arrived in Griffin to
day to join the Griffin host post
team in the double elimination
state championships.
The first g?me got under way
this afternoon at Bab? Ruth
field at 5:30 with Savannah tak
ing on College Park. Tonight At
hens, 1968 champs, will go ag
ainst Albany at 8 p.m.
Griffin is scheduled to go ag
ainst an unknown opponent to
morrow night at 8 o’clock, hav
ing drawn a first round bye.
A banquet for the players, coa
ches and other officials today
was the first function in the state
tournament, ft was held at the
community center at. noon.

National Broadcasting Compa
ny announced Monday a sche
dule of 68 American Football
League games to be telecast
this season, including 13 nation
al doubleheaders—l 2 on Sun
days and the other on
Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.
Coverage begins with the
Sept. 14 contest between the
Buffalo Bills and the world
champion New York Jets and
continues into post-season play
with the inter-divisional play
offs Dec. 20-21, the AFL title
game Jan. 4, 1970, and the AFL
All-Star Game, Jan. 17 at the
Houston Astrodome.

Area three will be represen
ted by Athens which will be look
ing for a reneat performance of
1968 when they defeated Sav
annah for the state crown.
The Athens squad returns to
state competition with exper
ience and a good bench.
Albany will represent area
four, a well balanced league. Al
bany is hieh on Eddie Cowart,
an outfielder who was voted
most valuable player of his lea
gue. He comes in with a batting
average of .687.
Savannah rounds out the tour
nament, representing area five.
This team was runner-up to Ath
ens in the state last year. Exper
ience and a strong bench
make the coast entry one of the
favorites.
Their candidate for MVP is
Calvin Weeks, MVP in District
One of area five.
In his junior year in Legion
play, he received a grant-in-aid
from Clemson College, S.C. In
his fre-hman year there he br
oke numerous records in batting
and fielding at Clem=on. He es
tablished nine all-conference re
cords.
Coach John R. Goode has a
history of successes in Legion
competition and will be after
adding another page this year.
