Assume Duties Here
The Rev. and Mrs. Leslie L.
Grounds of Lufkin. Texas, have
moved to Griffin to become the
associate pastor of the First
Assembly of God, 1411 Atlanta
road, according to Rev. C. E.
Johnson, pastor.
In addition to the associate
pastor duties, the Rev. Grounds
will direct the Griffin Christian
School, which is beginning this
September. Three Kindergarten
classes and one First Grade
class will be conducted by ths
church. Mrs. Grounds will teach
the first grade.
An ordained minister in t h e
Assemblies of God, the Rev.
Grounds has pastored churches
in north and east Texas for the
past 15 years. Prior to his min
istry in Texas, he was licensed
with the Michigan District As
semblies of God.

He graduated from college in
1955 with a B.A. degree and
later returned for additional edu
cation in the school’s music de
partment.
While in College, the Rev.
Grounds met Naomi Mauch,
who’s home was in Winner, Sou
th Dakota. They were married
in July 1955, and now have two
children, Sharia Ann, 9, and
Marvin Lee, 5.
Rev. Grounds has served chur
ches in Itasca, Waxahachie, Cr
ockett, and Lufkin, Texas. Dur
ing each pastorate he was ac
tive in community and minister
ial alliance activities. He h a s
also served as youth and Sun
day School representaive for
the areas he served, as well as
being a member of the District
Youth Director’s Cabinet. He
has been very active in the
Youth campaigning program.
The Grounds reside at 1407 At
lanta road, Griffin.

Miss Mitchell
To Be Buried
Miss Betty Mae Mitchell, a
lifelong resident of Spalding Co
unty, died Friday afternoon af
ter a long illness.
She was the daughter of t h e
late Mr. S. C. Mitchell and the
late Mrs. Mamie Wise Mitchell.
She is survived by a brother,
S. C. Mitchell Jr. and several
niecs and nphws.
Funeral services will be con
ducted from he graveside in the
Union Baptist Church cemetery
this afternoon at 4 o’clock. The
Rev. W. A. Ellenwood will offi
ciate.
Haisten Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Miss Brown Dies;
Was Teacher
Miss Alice Mathilda Brown,
a retired school teacher who
taught in the Griffin schools for
many years, died late yesterday
afternoon after an illness of se
veral months. She made her
home at 430 West Poplar street,
Miss Brown was born in Hawk
insville, the daughter of the
late Henry Clay Brown and the
late Mrs. Mary Delix Cox Br
own. She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a niece,
Mrs. Mary Alice Back Hatch,
Rosemont, Pa., and three nep
hews, Judge W. H. Beck Jr., Gr
iffin, Clay Daniel, Burbank, Ca
lif., and Milton J. Daniel, Provo,
Utah. Several grand nieces and
nephews also survive; among
them W. H. Beck 111 of Griffin.
Funeral services will be an
nounced by Pittman-Rawls.
VFW Names
Goodman
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hulet
te Goodman, Route 1, Griffin,
has been appointed to serve on
the Veterans of Foreign Wars of
the United States Americanism
and Community Activities Com
mittee at the organization’s 70th
Annual National Convention
Aug. 15-22 in Philadelphia, V.F.
W. Commander-in-Chief Richard
W. Homan, announced.
In making the announcemet,
Homan said, “Positive accep
tance of our responsibilities as
American citizens may well de
termine the direction in which
this nation is headed. The com
mittee to which I have appoin
ted Mr. Goodman considers re
solutions relating to several pro
grams conducted by the Vet
erans of Foreign Wars in the ar
eas of patriotism, civic and com
unity Activities, Youth Activi
ties, Loyalty Day and the Voice
of Democracy programs. Mr.
Goodman’s record of service in
our organization leaves no doubt
in my mind that he will contri
bute invaluably to the work of
this committee and I look for
ward to working with him in Phi
ladelphia.”
Junior Camp
The Girls’ Auxiliary Junior
Camp at the Flint River Baptist
Camp will begin Monday at 2
p.m. Mrs. Sara Pirkle will be
the GA Camp director. She will
be assisted by Miss Mary Beth
Brundidge from the state WMU
Department.
Rev. Robert Sorrow
Returns To Griffin
The Rev. Robert Sorrow has
assumed pastorate of the Mer
iwether Street Church of God.
A native of Walton County, he
attended Spalding Schools and
entered the ministry in 1953. He
is the son of the Rev. Howard
Sorrow, formerly of Griffin and
the late Mrs. Sorrow.
The Rev. Sorrow has served
pastorates in Milledgeville, El
berton, Louisville, Cedartowm,
Columbus and Swainsboro. He
has served the Church of God as
an evangelist for the past year
and a half, and comes to Griffin
from Atlanta. He will succeed
the late Rev. Arnold Ford who
died here May 12.
Rev. Sorrow is married to the
former Joan Moody of Warner
Robins. They have three child
ren, Greg 13, Mike, 10, and Pam
8. The family resides at 324 Eli
zabeth Lane.
Services are held at 11 a.m.
and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday with
Church School beginning at 10
a m. Midweek service is on Wed
nesday at 7:30.

Friday Wrecks
Injure Four
Two teenagers were injured
in a traffic accident last night
at Searcy avenue and Hamilton
boulevard east of Griffin, accor
ding to the Georgia State Patrol.
Phyllis Barnette. 17, of Wool
sey road, Hampton, suffered la
cerations to her face and scalp.
David Shirah, 17, of Upland dr
ive, Griffin, suffered lacerations
to his scalp. Both were treat
ed in the emergency room at
the Griffin-Spalding County Hos
pital.
Miss Barnette was listed as
driver of the car. Damage was
estimated at $350.
Trooper Bill Shivers said the
car ran through an interesection
and into a bank. He said there

MACON, Ga. (UPD—The as
sistant Bibb County district at
torney was rebuked by the
head of the State Pardons and
Parole Board Friday after he
attacked a board decision to
grant a medical reprieve to a
convict.
Dist. Atty. Fred Hasty
charged that the inmate, Ma
con businessman Bob Ginn, was
given the reprieve because of
his influence. He said Ginn
could have received treatment
for emphysema and other respi
ratory ailments inside the pris
on.
But Pardons and Parole
Board Chairman J.O. Partain
accused Hasty of "grandstand
ing” with the attack and said
the reprieve was motivated by
passion for a man who had no
money or Influence.
He said Hasty was trying to

Albany Housing
Report Ordered
ALBANY, Ga. (UPD — A de
tailed financial report was or
dered from the Albany Housing
Authority Friday by the finance
committee of the city commis
sion.
The commissioners said they
wanted a full accounting of a
$2 million surplus which it
claims the authority has.
They also noted that the au
thority returns to the city only
about $20,000 annually, not
enough to cover the cost of gar
bage collections at housing au
thority units.

Son Is Dead
Mr. George Lewis Nelms died
Thursday in Los Angeles, Ca
lif.,
He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. William Nelms of 699 South
Eighth street, Griffin.
Besides his parents, survivors
include his wife, Mrs. Anne
Fleming Nelms of Los Angeles;
four sisters, four brothers, sever
al nieces and nephews.
He will be buried in Washing
ton, D.C. Thursday morning at
10 o’clock.

Five Arrested
In Shine Raids
WATKINSVILLE, Ga. (UPD—
Federal and state revenue
agents along with Oconee Coun
ty sheriff’s officers arrested five
persons in a Friday raid on a
battery of moonshine stills near
here.
Authorities said they de
troyed 11,020 gallons of mash
and four stills with 1,800 gallons
capacity.
Arrested were Gerald Lamar
Brown, 18, and Clarence L.
Brown, 53, both of near Bishop;
and J. W. "Junebug” Ralston,
49, Bobby Gene Goswick, 27,
and Billy Wilson, 34, all of Daw
sonville.
The “white lightning” stills
were located about six miles
northwest of Watkinsville.
