South Grid Stars
Defeat North, 9-7
MACON, Ga. (UPI) — Three
pass interceptions and the flash
ing play of Thomson’s Ray Guy
led the South football All-Stars
to victory over the North 9 to
7 in the annual classic played
here Friday night.
The South drew first blood
with 2:43 left in the opening
quarter when Guy blasted a 28-
yard field goal through the up
rights. This came after the
South drove to the one-yard line
of the North, only to fumble the
ball away.
The North romped back be
fore time ran out in the first
half by scoring on a' one - yard
plunge by Al Jenkins of Hogans
ville with 28 seconds left before
intermission.
Jenkins’ score capped a 67-
yard drive for the North. The
key play in this series was a 32-
yard pass from Allan Chadwick
of Decatur High to halfback
Steve Morgan of St. Pius X.
Jim Arnett of St. Pius X
kicked the extra point, giving
the North a halftime bulge of
7 to 3.
Both teams missed an oppor
tunity to score in the third quar
ter. Guy attempted a 40 - yard
field goal which was wide of its
mark, and the North’s Jim
Arnett had a 24-yard field goal
attempt blocked by Mike Barnes
of Lanier High.
The South got its big break in
the fourth quarter when Guy in
tercepted a pass at the North 46
and hustled the ball back to the
North 14.
Five plays later Charles
Copeland of Warner
Robins bulled over from the one
with the go-ahead score. With
5:21 showing on the clock, Guy’s
extra point attempt was wide,
leaving the score 9 to 7.
The North then cranked up
for one last attempt at pulling
the game out. Allan Chadwick
reeled off 42 big yards on a
jaunt to the South 38. A penalty
put the North further in South
territory on the 21.
But at this point the South

Braves Split Pair
With New York Mets
ATLANTA (UPI) — Atlanta’s
much maligned pitching staff
has come up with new - found
muscle, but th e lusty hitting of
a couple of weeks ago is alarm
ingly absent.
“We’ve got to get some runs,”
moaned Ron Reed, minutes af
ter he salvaged a double-header
split with the New York Mets
Friday night, winning the sec
ond game 1-0 in 10 innings after
the Braves dropped the opener
4-1.
“Our staff, with the exception
of Phil Niekro, is just not gear
ed to throw shutous night after
night.”
In deference to the hitters,
however, Reed admitted that
“When you go out against pitch
ers like we’ve seen lately night
after night, you’re not going to
get many runs.”
Jerry Koosman applied the
pitching touch to the Braves in
the opener, shutting them out
until two were out in the ninth

when Bob Tillman hit a solo
homer for the Braves’ only run.
Milt Pappas had started for
the Braves, given up a scratch
■run in the second, and then
matched pitches with Koosman
through eight innings. Pappas,
however, was lifted for a pinch
hitter and the Mets got to three
relievers for three last - inning
runs.
Tire second-game pitchers,
Reed and Gary Gentry were as
evenly matched as any of the
42,838 customers on hand for
tne games could have asked.
Each gave up singles in the
second and third innings, then
each retired 11 consecutive bat
ters before the third hits came
along. At the end of nine each
had given up four hits and
struck out two.
Reed stuck around and
pitched the 10th, however, while
Gentry was retired in favor of
Ron Taylor. Taylor was touched
for a leadoff single by Clete
Boyer who was sacrificed to
, second. Pinch hitter Tito Fran
cona was walked intentionally
and then Rico Carty, hitting for
Reed, singled so sharply that
Boyer could not score from sec
ond. With the bases loaded, one
out, and the outfield drawn in,
Felipe Alou drilled a line single
over second to score Boyer with
the winning run.
