HOUSEHOLD HINTS
By United Press International
All vinyl floors should receive
regular applications of a
protective floor polish to
prevent excessive scratching and
soiling. Liquid water-emulsion
wax (self-polishing type) is
preferable since it can be
removed with cleaners which are
not injurious to the flooring.

POLLY’S POINTERS
Method for Cleaning
Spun Aluminum Pieces
By POLLY CRAMER
DEAR POLLY—I have first-hand information for Hannah
who wanted to keep her spun aluminum pieces looking
good as new. We are a major distributor of aluminum and
I presented this problem to our aluminum manager. His
professional answer was: “If the spun pieces are washed
frequently (every two or three weeks) in a mild detergent
they will retain their original beauty and usefulness. But,
a word of caution—alkalies, such as sal soda or baking
soda, attack the metal and therefore should never be used
on aluminum. Also, you may use a good abrasive-type
silver polish for the outside of an aluminum utensil. For
the inside, simply boil, for five to eight minutes, a solution
of two tablespoons of cream of tartar to each quart of
water in the utensil. To further brighten the inside, shine
with a steel wool pad.” Thank you for giving American
industry a chance to help the American home.—K. V. M.
Thank you, K. V. M. as we always appreciate hearing
what manufacturers recommend for their products. I am
sure the readers will use their good judgment about select
ing the proper treatment of their particular pieces whether
they are practical utensils or decorative pieces.—POLLY

DEAR POLLY—The Pointer about using a tile as a
memo pad helped me solve a problem. Every time I relax
in the tub I think of many things that should be added to
the grocery list or that need to be done. I tied one end of
a string securely to a pen and the other end to the tub
faucet. Now I make any notes or lists on the tiles and they
can be washed off later. By this same method, other family
members help by writing down toilet items as they are
needed.—MßS. J. B.
DEAR POLLY—When
packing for a family vaca
tion or trip, I list each item
on a file card as I put it in ® '
a suitcase. I then tape this (
card to the lid of the case. C V -A

FASHION IN THE NEWS
Eye-Openers on Slumber Scene
By HELEN HENNESSY
NEA Women's Editor
NEW YORK — (NEA) —
The sweetest dreams of the
season may well occur while
wearing wide-awake night
time fashions.
Designers have taken the
ho-hum out of sleepwear with
new emphasis on swingy,
zingy junior nitery.
Created expressly for girls
in the high school, college
and career set the new sand
man spectaculars have a
special appeal for astute
cuties who want around-the
clock fashion and not a
scaled-down version of more
conventional nightwear.
One of the leaders, Berk
leigh Juniors, for example,
suggests tunic-topped, lace
graced pant-sleeper suits in
gingham checks or near
sheer minilength shifts of
leno with teeny-bikinis un
derneath. A far cry from
straight -laced sleepwear,
they are.
If that approach isn’t
worth staying up for, the
junior designers have come
up with the modern Scarlet
O’Hara fashions—beruffled,
beflowered, deceptively de
mure Granny gowns. Or
Alice in Wonderland, drop
u'aist doll dresses, all done
up in eyelet embroidery and
lace.
There’s more of the stuff
that dreams are made of—
shifts, fetchingly smocked,
embroidered and appliqued
like mini Mother Hubbards—
all bikini-ed and beautiful.
These come in a variety of
ways including windowpane
checks on cotton and demi
checks on brushed Dacron
and cotton.

Fashion Tips
Fur pantsuits are for all day.
They range from calf to mink
and are cleverly cut in many
styles. Jumpsuits also come in
fur versions.

Bunches of rings on her

any fall fashion scene. Singular

enameling all contribute to
keeping rinfp right on fashion

Antique ideas in ring styles
still are favorites, the blackened
finish almost always diamond
studded. Here’s where the
cabochon amethysts, the
turquoises, the corals and the
cameos play their starring roles,
and pearls play the supporting
role.
