YODOEMACHI, Japan (UPI)-
Popularity of European-style
umbrellas has forced many ma

five manufacturers remain in this
center of the paper umbrella
industry, where more than 30
firms once were in the busi

For Run Signal
ATLANTA (UPl)—Republican
Sen. Oliver C. Bateman, minori
ty leader of the Georgia Senate,
said today he will set up a
“listening post at the forks of
every road in the state” to de
termine if he should run for
governor next year.
Bateman, of Macon, said he
would make his decision follow
ing his “quest for truth”
through the state. He gave no
indication when that would be.
“Deep inside my soul is a
conviction that Georgians are
looking now for more than just
a man who wants to be govern
or,” Bateman said in a pre
pared statement.
“We are all sick of the flam
boyant, but worn out, platitudes
of ambitious men who treat the
state’s highest gift as something
to be sought as winnings in a
poker game. The very struc
tures of our government are
creaking with aches and pains
which for too many years have
been compounded by politicians
long on talk, but short on per
formance.”
Bateman said he sees Georgia
in "its true potential as the
leader of the American way of
life...(with) all Georgians shar
ing in an educational, cultural
and spiritual revolution...”

Duckworth served as chief
justice of the state’s highest
court for 21 years. Before that,
he was presiding justice for a
brief period following 10 years
as an associate justice.
Maddox is required by law to
name a successor.
Death came to the outspoken

1953, but he managed to return
to work after several weeks.
Duckworth had served the
State Supreme Court since 1938,
and 10 years later was elected
chief justice by his associates.
In 1955, he was chosen chair

Duckworth was born in the
North Georgia hills, near
Blairsville, and worked his way
through Young Harris College.
He was admitted to the bar in
1919 after graduating from La-

Chicago.
He gained a measure of na

a bitter controversy in which
three men claimed to be gov

elected, but died before he could
take office. His son, Herman
Talmadge, now a U. S. Senator,
received 700 write - in votes,
the second highest total, and the
legislature declared him the vic

going governor, refused to give
up the office, which also was
claimed by Lt. Gov. M. E.
Thompson. Duckworth declared
Thompson to be the legal gov
