Abernathy
Gives Version
Os Pool Story
ATLANTA (UPl)—Rev. Raiph
Abernathy says there is no
truth to a charge that he led
a group of blacks as they alleg
edly broke into a white Alabama
swimming pool and ransacked
the concession stands.
The president of the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference
(SCLC) replied Tuesday to ac
cusations by Greene County
Sheriff Bill Lee in an incident
which followed the swearing in
at Eutaw, Ala. of six Negroes re
cently elected to the county
commission and school board.
Abernathy’s side of the story
differed widely from Lee’s ver
sion.
The civil rights leader said he
was at a picnic area five miles
from the pool when advised that
“some of the children” had
broken in and were swimming.
He said a white policeman, who
had been with him most of the
day, told him of the incident
and asked him to return to the
pool with him and get the chil
dren out.
Abernathy obliged and upon
his arrival, he said he found no
locks broken, as Lee claimed,
but rather the gate apparently
had been opened from the in
side after some of the young
sters scaled the fence.
He said he found “seven or
eight, but certainly less than 10”
children in the pool. He climbed
on a diving board so he could
be seen and asked them to
leave. They complied, he said.

The City Commissioners Tues
day night approved rezoning
from an R-l-A to an R-l zone
about five acres of land between
