Census Expected To Lead
To Congressional Revamp

WASHINGTON (UPI) —After
the 1970 census, population
changes combined with the one
man one-vote edict are expect
ed to force a redrawing of
congressional district lines in
many of the 50 states.
As a result, both major
parties have already zeroed in
on the 1970 state elections in an
attempt to control state legisla
tures which will be redrawing
those districts. They want the
control both for the political
power base Involved and
because they hope to get a
favorable break in the redis
tricting.
As an example, the Demo
crats say it would be theoreti
cally possible for the Republi
cans, if they controlled the
California Legislature in 1970,
to redraw the congressional
districts in such away the
Democrats could win only a
small percentage of the seats.
The current issue of "Demo
Memo,” a publication of the
Democratic National Commit
tee, carries Its lead story under
the headline, "Project '7O:
Legislative Races.” It notes
that the committee’s executive
committee authorized Sen. Fred
R. Harris of Oklahoma, national
party chairman, to appoint a
special task force to develop a
national program to win
legislative seats. ’
At Republican headquarters,
control of legislatures is one of
the assignments given to the
newly organized campaign divi
sion. That division is supposed
to set standards of performance
to measure capablity of the

for legislative campaigns will

judged.
The GOP is planning to send
advisory task forces into most
states before the 1970 elections.
These also will be concerned
with legislative elections.

Boys Clubs of America, will be
guest speaker at this week’s
meeting of the Griffin Exchan
ge Club on Tuesday, at noon, at
the Elks Club. Warren Scoville
is program chairman.

The Spalding County BPW
Club will meet Tuesday at noon
at LuAnn’s Restaurant.
Nobel specialists
BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI)
The University of California at
Berkeley has more faculty mem
bers who have been awarded
the Nobel Prize than any other
university in the world.
Eleven scholars from the cam
pus have won the coveted award.
Although the Supreme Court
is compelling population equali
ty in legislative and congres
sional districts, it has done
nothing about the gerrmander,
the arrangement of district
boundaries for the benefit of
the party controlling the
legislature.

Couple Hurt
In Wreck Here
A Barnesville couple was in
jured in an accident yesterday
at Barnesville and High Falls
roads in East Spalding County.
They were admitted to the Grif
fin-Spalding County Hospital.
Olin E. Crawford, 76, of Route
Three, Barnesville, suffered la
cerations to his upper and lower
lips and fractured ribs.
Mrs. Crawford, 62, suffered a
fractured femur bone, fractured
right wrist, fractured humer
us bone, fractured right clavi
cle and fractured mandible
bone.
Both were listed in fair condi
tion today.
He was listed as driver of the
car. He told state troopers that
he was driving in heavy fog and
ran through the intersection and
hit a bank.
Fashion Show
A fashion show will be staged
tomorrow night at the Rural
Urban Center at 7:30. It will :
feature 36 young girls who have
participated in a Singer sew- 1
ing program this summer.
Prizes will be awarded in three
age categories.
Miss Louise Biles was the in
structor.
Winners in the local contest
will be eligible for regional and 1
national competition.

Newcomers
Club Being
Organized
A newcomers club is being or
ganized for wives of newcomers
to Griffin. An organizational
meeting of the new club is plan
ned for Setptember.
Organizational arrangements
are being handled by Mrs. Ron
ald Lane.
The club will be composed
of wives of newcomers. The club
will meet monthly and have sm
all monthly dues. Socials will be
held occasionally to include new
comer husbands.
Different groups will be organ
ized within the club to Include
the different interests of the
members, such as bowling and
bridge.

Thomaston Dies
THOMASTON — Mrs. Mary
Alma Mason, 86, of 515 S o u t h
Church street, Thomaston, died
early yesterday morning at the
Upson County Hospital.
Mrs. Mason was a lifelong re
sident of Upson County and a
member of the First B a pt i st
Church.
She is survived by four step
daughters, Mrs. Jim Abernathy,
Miss Ethel Mason, both of Tho
maston, Miss Margaret Mason
and Mrs. Mabel Meek, both of
Atlanta; three stepsons, Dr. P.
K. Mason of Savannah, Frank
Mason of Macon and Jack Ma
son of Columbus; a brother, L.
L. Boyt of Macon; a half-broth
er, Abe Boyt of Griffin; and
three half sisters, Mrs. Mattle
Corley of Yatesville, Mrs. Net
tle Sanders and Mrs. Lottie Bl
ume, both of Thomaston.
Funeral services were held this
morning at 11 o'clock from the
Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home
chapel in Thomaston. The
Rev. E L. Cliburn officiated and
burial was in the South View ce
metery.
