NEW YORK—(NE A)-In
this season of many different
looks, a wardrobe of shoes
from high-riding to sandal
ous, unisex to feminine is a
fashion must.
As footwear designs dis
play their different charac
ters, so do the leathers of
which they are made. The
list of leathers includes
smooth, grained and suede
leathers; patent leather, em
bossed and printed leather,
brushed, waxy and the
antiqued variety.

Fashion’s regimented days
are over. The “One Look"
seasons are passe. The free
style era has replaced them.
Clothes are modeled with a
Thirties look, a gypsy air, a
casual mood.
And beauty has taken the
fashion cue. Hair—all kinds
of hair—is “in.”
The long, thick mane has
gone curly and wavy; short
hair is bobbed: medium
length styles hug the head,
then flip out in curls at the
chin.

should be the full-toed slip
on with interesting front de
tailing. This includes vamp
insets, raised tongues, buck
les or other hardware.
For under pantsuits, there
are pantsboots, ankle-high,
or pantshoes with that up
front look.
Heels are chunky but may
be low to mid-high. Leathers
used are heavy in the
smooth, waxy, grained and
antique finishes.
On pantboots the accent is
on stitched or perforated
trim. On pantshoes the
fashion points are brass
studs or chains.

binding up the front. Next boot combines suede and
smooth leather, showing off interesting scroll work
and the new high heel with inward curve. These are
Golo designs. High-riding red-embossed lizard leather
pantshoe sports open sling-back and high stacked
heel by Mademoiselle. Closed spat bootie in dark
brown and beige smooth leather on wide mid-height
heel are by La Piuma. The wide variety assures a
style for any fall-winter outfit.
For softer jerseys and
knits, daytime pumps are in
dressier leathers with softer
toelines and chunky but
higher heels.
The strap has returned for
another season in different
widths and looks.
New at-home footwear for
parties or relaxing comes in
a wealth of colors and leath
ers. For quiet evenings at
home, there are soft, leather
flatties trimmed with fringe,
buckles or jeweling. Newest
at-home footwear are slings,
mules and sandals with
wedge or platform soles.

is to the high-fronted look
with cut-out design, an out
sized bow or a jeweled
buckle. Heels are higher and
slightly whittled.
Colors are luscious in this
season’s leather s—many
browns with reddish tones,
camel, gray, garnet, moss
green, winter white, taupe
and bright red.
Brushed leathers take best
to raspberry, red fox (an
orangey tone), heath blue,
green, gold and taupe.
Navy is a favorite and
black is back for casual and
dressy designs.

Latest import from
Scandinavia is in the footwear
division — clogs for men, women
and children. These are slip-ons,
without backs, but with thick
wooden soles. Those who fancy
them declare them the most
comfortable footwear around,
especially for those on their feet
for long hours each day. The
shoes, which are made in
Sweden and Norway, have
rubber, skid-proof pads attached
to the bottom of the sole and
heel. Uppers come in a variety of
styles and colors. One shop
owner featuring the clogs, Harry
Vallin, says of them — “They are
easy to break in, but it takes a
few test runs to get used to
them.”

Soft by day, shiny by night —
this about sums up the look of
fall fashions for the coed set.
Much of the daytime softness
comes from the fabrics, for knits
are a heavy favorite. And the
sweater look is a big thing for
fall. Shiny satins, metallic knits
and velveteens highlight the date
dress scene.

Pants in a woman’s wardrobe
call for some special types of
underpinnings. The Lingerie
Industry Council suggests that
this underneath wardrobe: Pants
liners, which are narrow legged
crepes and tricots to do for
pants what slips do for dresses,
give them body; soft body suits,
which stem upward from a
pantie into a camisole top;
camisoles, which are
grandmother’s corset cover
updated to underline shirts; and
bikinis, with a high cut and a
soft edge so that pantie line
shows through pants that are
clingy.
pieces are intertwined to
create the gypsy look—long,
straight hair, with several
fake braids wound through
it, and a scarf used as a
wide band across the fore
head, tieing at the side of the
head.
Permanents, rarely used
during the last few seasons,
are back to create curls with
staying power. Curling irons
also come in handy for a
curl or wave touch-up at the
end of the day.
Hair ornaments add to the
total look, too. Flowers lace
curls and braids; jeweled
pms and tiaras perch on a
mass of waves; barretts ac
cent side-parted or upswept
hair. And, of course, the
'scarf, this season’s all-pur
pose fashion accessory, is at
home on hair.
With short, bobbed hair,
the cut is the thing. Once
styled, it will need only two
or three clips or cellophane
tape to hold side and nape
curls in place.
Which hair style is the
best? That’s the beauty of
this beauty era. Pick the one
that suits you — think in
terms of where you go and
what you wear —and that
hairstyle is the best—for you.
