Homer Happy Braves
Blast Padres, 10-4
By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPI)-Phil Nie
kro had every reason in the
world to be happy.
The knuckleballing righthand
er had just pitched Atlanta to
its seventh consecutive win, a
104 victory over San Diego, for
his 22nd victory of the year.
During the course of the game,
Niekro had three singles in
three at bats and scored a run,
accounting for the first and last
hit in a six-run Atlanta third.
Moreover, it was a really big
win because it kept the Braves
a game and a half in front of
San Francisco.
He should have been ecstatic.
But Phil Niekro was angry.
“I don’t like it one (censored)
bit,” snapped the normally
laconic Niekro. “Pve had
enough of it.”
What had Niekro upset was
that Padres’ Manager Preston
Gomez started Joe Niekro,
Phil’s younger brother, on the
mound for San Diego in place
of Tom Sisk, the scheduled
starter.
‘‘Gomez should sit down and
think about the spot he put Joe
in,” Phil continued. “Joe wants
me to win every time I pitch
because he knows how much I
want to win the pennant. And I
want him to win when he

“But I just had to beat him
tonight.”
“Maybe Gomez knew how I’d
feel and thought it would affect
my pitching. They don’t care
about feelings. And we’re so
close.
“How can a guy go out and
pitch his heart out against his
brother.”
Phil, who was not as sharp as
he has been previously, was
touched for eight hits in his
eight innings, including solo
home runs by Tommy Dean
and Al Ferrara.
Joe, meanwhile, was staked
to an early 3-0 lead, but was
obviously not pitching like he
did earlier in the season when
he beat Phil 1-0 on the coast or
when he shut out the Braves in
Atlanta.
Phil opened the third inning
with a single, and Felix Millan
and Tony Gonzales followed
with singles to load the bases.
Hank Aaron popped out, but
Joe walked Rico Carty to force
in a run and make the score 3-
1. Then Orlando Cepeda drove a
high fast ball some 425 feet to
center for a grand slam homer,
his 22nd round-tripper of the
year.
That chased Niekro. Frank
Reberger came on in relief and
Clete Boyer hit his first pitch
for another homer, Boyer’s 14th
this year.
The Braves made it 7-3 in the
following inning when Hank
Aaron hit his 44th homer of the
year to tie Willie McCovey of
San Francisco for the National
League lead.
Felix Millan, who had four
hits, doubled in one of two fifth
inning runs and singled in the
final Atlanta score in the
seventh.
The Braves, with four games
left, “can’t be beat,” according
to Niekro, who pitched only

Seminoles Stop
Hurricanes. 16-14
By LES KJOS
MIAMI (UPl)—Florida State
Coach Bill Peterson promised
before the Seminoles’ game
with Miami Friday night his
team would “fall back and
throw” but the difference in
the 16-14 Florida State win was
the foot of Grant Guthrie, rath
er than the arm of rangy Bill
Cappieman.
Guthrie kicked three-pointers
of 53, 26, and 31 yards—the last
one winning the game with 1:55
to go after the Hurricanes had
battled back into a 14-13 lead.
Hurricane Coach Charlie Tate
agreed: “The big difference in
the game was the field goals—
their blocking of our field goal,
and the three field goals they
scored.”
linebacker Ron Lowe blocked
a Jim Huff field goal try and a
penalty on the play set up
Guthrie’s first boot getting the
Seminoles back in the game af
ter trailing 7-0 at the quarter.
Peterson was unhappy with
his team's offense.
“As bad as we played offen
sively, I don’t see how we won
the game. The defense as fan
tastic.”
The Seminoles' big clutch
drive leading to the winning
goal started on their own 10
and wound up on the Hurricane
12, 15 plays later.

eight innings because he is
scheduled to start again Tues
day in the next-to-the-last game
of the season. “The way we’re
playing now, we can’t be beat.
And we know it. We’re swinging
at the right pitches and
throwing to the right bases and
making the big plays.”
Four wins, of course, seals
the Western Division title for
Atlanta. It would give them
eleven wins in a row.
Can they do it?
“It’s not hard to do,” Niekro
said. “Not the way we’re going
now.”
