Rico’s Bat Clinches Tie For Braves
By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPI)-Clete Boy
er watched Rico Carty slapping
batting practice pitches high
into the left field seats at At
lanta Stadium and shook his
head, saying “The big guy’s got
strength he doesn’t even know
about.”
Three hours later, Boyer and
28,000 fans were still marveling
at the strength of the big Domi
nican, who a year ago was in
a Florida tuberculosis hospital
and who got a late start this
year following early season in
juries.
Carty continued his stirring
comeback Sunday, slamming a
homer and a double, driving in
three runs and narrowly miss
ing another home run in a 4-2
victory over San Diego.
Tie Clinched
The victory clinched at least
a tie for the Western Division

One more win by Atlanta or a

championship to the Braves.
The Giants forestalled an At

play ball the way he can.”
Few people thought Carty
could come back after a year
of inactivity and have the kind
of season he’s had; many
thought he would be washed up
earlier this year following crip
pling shoulder injuries that kept
him out of the lineup nearly
two months and left him still
unable to throw effectively.

many of them as a pinch-hitter

Coach Max Dowis looked at
the Griffin-Clarkston film only
briefly over the weekend. He
didn’t have time to check it
carefully.
He was too busy looking at
Lee films.
Coach Dowis will send his un
beaten Eagles against Lee’s un
beaten and highly rated Rebels
Friday night in Thomaston. It is
rated one of the top prep games
in the state.
“I didn’t get a chance to
check the Griffin film carefully.
However, I saw enough to know
that the fact didn’t quit
was the most valuable thing of
all.
“We made some mistakes but
we played hard enough to offset
them. Playing hard and hust

Even Braves General Mana
ger Paul Richards thought
when Carty suffered two shoul
der separations early in the
season, he would be unable to
play except for pinch-hitting.
But Carty came back during
the last month. While Atlanta
has gone 19-6, Carty has batted

things,” he said.
Coach Dowis considers
Griffin’s 16-14 victory over
Clarkston “a real team effort.”
The way Griffin came back
after being down 14-10 late in
the fourth is still the talk of the
town.
“It took a lot of poise and
pride to do that,” an avid fan
said. “It proved Griffin has a
great football team.”
Practically everyone, who
saw, the game agrees with the
statement.
“I don’t think we’ll have any
trouble getting the players up
for the Lee game. Our problem
might be keeping from being too
high,” Coach Dowis said. He’s
afraid that if the Eagles are ex
tremely high they’ll be overly
tense.
The Eagles will look at the
film of their victory over Clark
ston several times today before
hitting the field to start pre
paring for the battle with arch
rival Lee.

Vikings Humiliate
Baltimore, 52-14
By JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
Joe Kapp, the Minnesota
Vikings' 31-year-old reserve
quarterback, has long been
labeled a poor passer. In fact,
last season he finished 13th
among National Football
League passers—and the Vik
ings won the Central Division
title
The Baltimore Colts, on the
other hand, have long been
reputed as one of the finest
defensive teams in pro football.
They allowed only 144 points
last season, winning the NFL
title before bowing to the New
York Jets in the Super Bowl.
Kapp tore both reputations
apart Sunday when he threw a
record-tying seven touchdown
passes as the Vikings humbled
tiie Colts, 52-14. He completed 28
of 43 passes for 449 yards and
hit six different receivers for
touchdowns.
In other NFL action, Green
Bay edged San Francisco, 14-7,
Cleveland downed Washington,
27-23, Detroit shut out New
York, 24-0, Philadelphia ripped
Pittsburgh, 41-27, St. Louis
nipped Chicago, 20-17, Los
Angeles defeated Atlanta, 17-7,
and Dallas beat New Orleans,
21-17.
Takes Over Early
The veteran Kapp, signed by
Minnesota two years ago after
a successful career with
Vancouver in the Canadian
League, took over when Gary
Cuozzo broke his nose early in
the game.
Larry Smith plunged a yard
for one score and Roman
Gabriel passed four yards to
Wendell Tucker for another as
the Rams beat the Falcons.
Norm Snead threw five TD
passes—four to Ben Hawkins—
as the Eagles bounced back
from a 13-point first-period
disadvantage to wallop the
Steelers.
Rookie Calvin Hill ground out
141 yards and two touchdowns
to rally the Cowboys to a
victory over the stubborn
Saints. The Yale rookie raced
nine yards for the deciding
touchdown with 9:46 left in the
game after New Orleans took
the lead on Tom Dempsey’s 43-
“God gave me a bat and
made me a hitter,” Carty said
after the Braves ran their cur
rent winning streak to nine. “I
know my bat and...if I got any
eyes I know I can hit.”
Carty Confident
He exuded confidence the
Braves will clinch the pennant
and face the New York Mets
for the National League title in
a five game series.
The Mets, proclaimed Carty,
are “just another ball club. This
is money time now. If we get
yard field goal.
Boosts Browns Over
Bill Nelsen threw a 15-yard
touchdown pass to Gary Collins
with only 1:19 remaining, to
boost the Browns over the
Redskins. Nelsen’s pass, cli
maxing a 74-yard drive, came
after Sonny Jurgensen’s passing
had helped the ’Skins score two
touchdowns within two minutes
to take the lead.
Bart Starr teamed with Jim
Grabowski for a two-yard TD
pass in the fourth quarter that
gave the Packers their victory
over the Forty Niners. Dave
Hampton returned the second
half kickoff 87 yards for a
touchdown but the Forty Niners
tied the game on the first play
from scrimmage on John
Brodie’s 80-yard pass to Clifton
McNeil.
Bill Munson set up one
touchdown and passed 15 yards
to Nick Eddy for another as the
Lions blanked the Giants. Lem
Barney also scored on a 74-yard
punt return.
Willis Crenshaw crashed two
yards for the deciding touch
down and Mac Percival missed
a 26-yard field goal attempt
with four seconds remaining to
enable the Cardinals to defeat
the Bears.

“Some people say they’re go

continued Carty. “But if this
