Georgia, Tech Have More
Similarities Than Records
By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPI) - While
neither Georgia nor Georgia
Tech probably would be willing
to admit it, they have football
teams with more similarities at
the moment than their 2-0 rec
ords.

If the New York Mets can
win, why not the Cincinnati
Bengals?
The Bengals still have a long
way to go before they can be
accepted as contenders, but
they’re slowly building support.
They made it three victories in
a row Sunday by stopping
previously undefeated Kansas
City, 24-19, and now at least
they must be taken seriously.

In Pucara, Peru,
the lights go on at twilight
and off at 10 p. m.
Same goes for Ayaviri, Cuyo Cuyo and Coota.
Every day of the year. Except when they flicker
and go off. Like if one person too many turns
on an iron and the whole town goes black.
But in Athens. Rome, Cairo and everywhere else
in Georgia you can count on electricity 99.9%
of the time. Even in summer when everyone is
running air conditioners, electric fans, and raiding
the refrigerator for ice cubes. Or on a cold
winter morning when thousands of coffee makers
are perking, hot showers are running, electric
blankets are making it harder to get up and
electric heating is making it easier.
We apologize for that .1%. We’re trying to close
the gap and make a perfect record. Maybe
someday we will. But until then, you can depend
on the other 99.9. And that’s a promise!

The seventh - ranked Georgia
Bulldogs trounced Clemson up
in “Death Valley” 30-0 Satur

edging Baylor 17-10 at home.
“Actually, we had several
easy touchdowns, so the final
score was somewhat deceiv
ing,” said Georgia Coach Vince
was their second in a row over
teams which were supposed to
vie for the AFL’s Western
Division title this year. Last
weekend, the Bengals defeated
the San Diego Chargers, 34-20.
Their triumph over the
Chargers gained added meaning
Sunday when San Diego upset
the world champion New York
Jets, 34-27. The loss was the
Jets’ second in a row.
In other games, Oakland beat
Boston, 38-23, Houston topped
Miami, 22-10, and Buffalo
defeated Denver, 41-28.
Cincinnati had to rely on
substitute quarterback Sam
Wyche to defeat the Chiefs, as
rookie sensation Greg Cook was
injured late in the second
quarter.
Wyche came through the way
coach Paul Brown hoped he
would by completing an 80 yard
touchdown pass to Bob Trum
phy in the fourth quarter to put
the Bengals ahead, 17-13. A
fumble recovery by Clem
Turner then led to a 19-yard TD
run by Jess Phillips later in the
quarter and the Bengals were
home free.
John Hadi was the big leader
for the Chargers, as he stunned
the Jets with three touchdown
passes. Hadi, who passed for
281 yards, connected on scoring
passes of nine yards to Lance
Alworth, and 13 and 29 yards to
Gary Garrison. Joe Namath hit
on 29 of 51 passes for 344 yards
in a losing effort.

“I was very pleased that we
were able to hold them score
less. That doesn’t happen much
these days, especially two in a
row.”
Although Dooley insisted
Georgia’s offense was “still a
little sluggish,” quarterback
Mike Cavan scored one touch
down himself and threw touch
down passes of 53 and 59 yards.
The first was to tight end
Dennis Hughes whose home is
just outside of Clemson and who
went to Georgia because he
was angry about the treatment
he received from a Clemson
trainer while in high school.
“I live just a couple of min
utes from here,” Hughes said
after the game. “Believe me,
this game means something
special.”
Georgia Tech, for the second
straight week, won on the late
heroics of sophomore quarter
back Charles Dudish.

“We might not have scored on

“Last week, Dudish might not

that has to encourage you.”
Carson, unhappy about Tech’s

233-pound tight end Steve Fos

“He’s big enough and he’s

“Maybe with him running in

other things on offense.”

Isn’t Worried
Harris Not Taking
Sleeping Pills Yet
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - Atlanta ]
Braves manager Luman Harris,
sitting with his stocking feet
propped on his desk and a
piece of fried chicken in his
hand, tried to conceal his
elation—but he wasn’t doing a
very good job of it.
The Braves had just knocked
off the San Diego Padres for j
their ninth straight win (an At
lanta record) and assured
themselves of at least a tie for j
the National League’s Western ,
Division title.
Harris Cooling It
But Harris was trying to play |
it cool pending the outcome of
the Giants-Dodgers game which
had just started when the ;
Braves won. The Giants won 8-1
and stayed mathematically
alive at 2% games behind. (The
Giants still have three games, i
the Braves two.)
Griffin Daily News
“Sure, I’m happy that we’ve
got the tie cinched, but I’ll be
happier when we have it won,”
said Harris who never came
this close with a major league
team before.
“This doesn’t change the way
I feel,” he continued. “I never
worry. Anyway, I haven’t had
to start taking pills to sleep—
yet. I just try to figure out my
pitching. That’s the key to this
game.”
The Giants’ victory Sunday
forces Harris to stick to his
original rotation, at least for
Tuesday’s game with Cincinnati
when he’ll go with Phil Niekro,
his22-game-winning knuckler.
If the Braves could have
wrapped up the division title .
Sunday, Harris would have used
Niekro and 18-game winner Ron
Reed sparingly against the
Reds to keep them fresh for
next weekend’s playoff series
with the Eastern Division
3
Monday, Sept. 29, 1969
champion New York Mets.
Not Two-Pitcher Club
Actually, it won’t make a lot
of difference—providing Niekro
wins Tuesday. Harris can then
let Reed skip Thursday’s regu
lar season finale and use Nie
kro and Reed Saturday-Sunday
against the Mets here.
“Sure Niekro and Reed are.
our top pitchers right now, but
this is not a two-pitcher club,”
Harris insisted. “We’ve got two
fellows who’ve won 13 (lefty
George Stone and righthander
Pat Jarvis, Sunday’s winner)
and don’t forget about that
(Cecil) Upshaw. He’s got six
wins and 27 saves coming out
of the bullpen.”
