A government spokesman
said Karel Franc, 46, Czechoslo
vakia’s consul general to
Australia since 1965, applied for
citizenship for his family
Tuesday.
The request was approved
this afternoon, the spokesman
said. Efforts to reach the Franc
family for comment were
unsuccessful.
Franc was a close friend of
Alexander Dubcek, the Czecho
slovak reformist who was
purged from the Communist
party’s presidium in Prague
during the weekend.
The diplomat had made no
secret of his displeasure with
the Soviet-led invasion of
Czechoslovakia Aug. 21, 1968,
and the crackdown on Dubcek’s
“experiment in freedom” that
followed.
An official of the Czechoslo
vak consul general’s office said
Franc had been given orders to
return home following die
weekend purges in his nation’s
capital. He refused further
comment.
It was reported Franc sent
his resignation to the consulate
early today and went into
hiding with his wife, Geraslov,
and three sons-

Police Ask Their
Names Be Removed
COLUMBUS, Ga. (UPI) -
Three police officers filed a
motion Tuesday to have their
names removed from a highly
critical grand jury report and
Muscogee Superior Court Judge
Allen Davis said the motion
was “well taken.”
The June-July grand jury
sternly criticized Police Chief
B.F. McGuffy, Maj. S.W. Brown
and Lt. Clayton Craig, saying
the trio should be either dis
missed or demoted. However, a
special grand jury, convened
last month to investigate the
presentment, praised the offi
cers and said city police had
crime well under control.
Columbus mayor J. R. Allen
and the city commission voted
for a state investigation to clear
up the conflicting reports. But
Gov. Lester Maddox and Atty.
Gen. Arthur Bolton said the
state would not get involved in
this purely local affair.
The three officers want Davis
to declare the earlier grand
jury’s investigations illegal, con
tending that they went into a
field where they had no jurid
diction.
Hunter Will Train
South Viet Pilots
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI)- By
midsummer 1970, about 400
South Vietnamese helicopter pi
lots should be in training at
Hunter Army Air Field, offici
als announced Tuesday.
The program starts March 7.
The Vietnamese pilots will go
to Lackland AFB at San Anton
io, Tex. for an English lan
guage course, then to Ft. Wal
ters, Tex. for primary helicop
ter training before coming here.
The UH-1 (Huey) helicopter,
similar to the aircraft used in
combat by American forces in
Vietnam, will be used for in
structing the South Vietnamese.
Army experts said the school
should graduate about one class
every two weeks once the full
operations gets going. Rep. G.
Elliott Hagan, D-Ga., said the
training program was part of
President Nixon’s efforts to re
place Americans with South
Vietnamese in the struggle
against North Vietnam.

Tax Collections
Up First Quarter
*
ATLANTA (UPl)—lncreased
tax collections for September
and for the first quarter of the
current fiscal year reflect Geor- •
gia’s bright economic future,
Revenue Commissioner Peyton
Hawes said Tuesday.
1
Hawes said, however, it was
not all roses. He pointed out
that most economists are pre-,
dieting a slowdown “which
could affect Georgia’s revenue
outlook by the end of the cur
rent fiscal year.” «
Collections for September
jumped 14 per cent over collec
tions from last September and •
totalled over S7O million. First
quarter intake totalled $208.3
million for a 15.2 per cent in
