STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (PRN)-Senator Herman Talmadge,
speaking at a news conference at Stone Mountain Park,
announces formal plans for the national dedication next spring
of the Stone Mountain Memorial Carving. Talmadge, chairman
of the newly-formed Advisory Committee on the Stone
Mountain Dedication, said President Richard Nixon has been
formally invited to make the principal address during dedication
ceremonies now set for late April or early May, 1970. Senator
Talmadge said officials from each of the original 13 confederate
states of America will be special guests during the dedication
events.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga.
(PRN) — After 52 years,
formal plans have been
announced for the national
dedication next spring of the
Stone Mountain Memorial
Carving, world’s largest work
of sculptural art.
Senator Herman Talmadge,
chairman of the newly formed
Advisory Committee on the
Stone Mountain Memorial
Dedication, announced at a
news conference at Stone
Mountain that the dedication
ceremonies have been set for
next April or May. He also
announced that President
Richard Nixon has been
invited to make the principal
address.
Talmadge said officials
from the 13 former
confederate states as well as
national dignitaries would be
special guests for the
dedication. He said the
dedication will be “one of the
major commemorative events
of this century.”
Senator Talmadge also
announced the membership of
the Advisory committee. He
said the committee, working
in conjunction with the Stone
Mountain Memorial
Association, will act as official
sponsor for a series of
dedication events leading up
to the hoped-for address by
President Nixon at the
unveiling of the completed
carving.
Committee members
include Ivan Alienor., Mayor
of Atlanta; Eugene Black,
former President of the World
Bank; Congressman Ben
Blackburn; Beverly M.
Dußose, Jr., President of the
Atlanta Historical Society;
Howard H. Callaway, former
Congressman and President of
the Ida Cason Callaway
Foundation; Phil Campbell,
Under Secretary of
Agriculture; Lucius D. Clay,
General of the Army, retired;
Dr. E. Merton Coulter, author
and Professor Emeritus of
History, University of Georgia;

Commenting on the
symbolism of the carving,
Senator Talmadge said:
“It is much more than a
monument to the South. It is
an indelible memorial to a
critical period in the
forging of our country...a time
of conflict, which, though
tragic, gave birth to the united
nation we have become.”
The dedication program, as
outlined by Senator Talmadge,
will include a series of events
spanning several days. These
events include a formal
reception at the Georgia
Governor’s mansion for
governors, senators,
congressmen and other
officials from the 13 former
Confederate States who will
be special guests for the
dedication, and the planned
issuance of a commemorative
postage stamp by the Post
Office Department timed to
coincide with the dedication.
