SAYS:
Pro Football About
To Enter New Era
By FRAN TARKENTON
Written for NEA
NEW YORK — (NEA) —
Many revolutionary things
have happened to pro foot
ball in this decade and now,
with less than a month re
maining in the 19605, the
natural question arises:
What will the 1970 s bring?
There will be new stars in
the ’7os, of course, and
coaches will surely add a
few new twists to the game,
but even more significant is
the fact that the game itself
will be launched on a com
pletely new era. When this
season ends, fans are going
to have to do a lot of study
ing to keep up with the
changes that are going to be
made in the entire structure
of pro football.
Next season, the NFL and
AFL will become one entity,
completing the merger first
announced in 1966. The
Cleveland Browns, Balti
more Colts and Pittsburgh
Steelers will be leaving what
used to be the NFL and join
the American Conference of
the “new” National Football
League. The rest of the
teams will be juggled until
both the American and Na
tional Conferences have
three divisions each, totaling
13 teams.
It all sounds confusing, at
first, but it really isn’t so
bad. It all boils down to each
conference having two four
team divisions and one of
five teams. The confusion is
not in the set-up itself, but
in the juggling that will take
place to determine which
team plays in which divi
sion. The team owners, of
course, are going to insist
upon creating some new
geographic rivalries, like the
Giants and Jets in New
York, the Rams and Charg
ers in southern California,
without sacrificing any of
the established rivalries that
have evolved over the years.
Succeeding to everyone’s
satisfaction will be the big
gest trick of all.
Besides the new league
alignment, the fans in 1970
are going to have to adjust
to a new play-off system that
does seem a trifle compli-

record. That means there
will be three division cham
pions and one second-place
team playing off for the con
ference title.
It also means that a sec
ond-place team in the regu
lar season could win the con
ference title and even the
Super Bowl. Which isn’t all
that revolutionary, when you
consider the Boston Celtics
finished fourth during the
regular NBA season and
won the championship last
year.
But I must admit some
confusion over what will
happen, say, if two teams
wind up in a regular-season
tie for second place and
their records are better than
the other runners-up.
Getting back to the re
alignment of the league, I
think the NFL is going to
try to keep the four Central
Division teams together.
They are, of course, the
Bears, Lions, Packers and
Vikings. But what will hap
pen in the East and West is
open to debate. The team
that seems to be in limbo,
geographically, is Dallas,
which could wind up on ei
ther coast. And I don’t think
either division is going to
try too hard to get a team as
good as the Cowboys.
Another team that might be
hurt geographically is St.
Louis. I don’t think the Car
dinals will go into the Cen
tral Division, but I suspect
they might wind up on the
West Coast. In fact, I sus
pect Dallas may wind up
there, too, with the Rams,
49ers and probably New Or
leans. And, with the Rams
and Dallas in the same divi
sion, the second-place berth
in the play-offs doesn’t sound
like such a bad idea after
all.
In the East, I think the
Giants, Eagles and Redskins
will stay together with the
Atlanta Falcons. But every
thing is pure conjecture at
this stage and nothing will
be settled until after the Su
per Bowl. Then the owners
are going to have to do some
fast shuffling if they are
planning any trades. In fact,
I don’t think you’ll see many
trades until after the re
alignment is complete. No
body is going to trade to a
team that might wind up in
the same division.

Elvin Hayes poured in 35 points

126-107 victory over Western Di

Hannum took over the San Di

following the firing of Jack Mc-
Mahon.
The Rockets, playing well as

lead in the first quarter and
were never threatened.
The Hawks, who had a six
game winning string, cut the
San Diego lead to 87-77 on a
lay-in by Lou Hudson with 10:30
left but never got closer.
Art Williams had 19 assists
for the Rockets to set a San Di

own club record. However, Wil

Cassius Goes
Into Training
TAMPA, Fla. (UPI)-Cassius
Clay, shouting “Praise be to
God,” has gone into training in
Chicago even before attorneys
work out final details of a
dream bout in Tampa Feb. 16
with heavyweight Joe Frazier.
Attorney Bob Arum said Clay
“became very emotional about
the chance to fight, even if it’s
for nothing. When I told him
what was in the works, he said
‘Praise be to God.’ He went
into training Wednesday.”
