WEIGHT - If and when you start to gain weight,
whereabouts on your body do you first show it? The
midsection, I presume. That’s usual. But do you know the
second place where overweight is most apt to become
apparent? The face. Or so reports a team of New York doctors
looking into the obesity situation. After that, they say, the
new heft shows up in your legs, then your arms, finally your
thighs.
OPEN QUESTIONS: 1. It’s a stampede when a herd of
cattle panics, but what do you call it when a flock of sheep
does likewise? 2. Why is it the right rear tire tends to wear out
first? 3. How does it happen the bloodless bullfight never
caught on in this country?
ON THAT LIST of the 10 preferred cities whereat people
would like to make their homes, Boise, Ida., isn’t even named,
What an odd omission! Boise is probably one of the three most
desirable places to live in the country. . THAT ANCIENT
NOTION that your household bills run less in the sunny South
no longer holds up. A window air conditioner will use more
power in the several hot months than an electric range will use
all year.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Q “Which outnumber which - the
people with vacation cottages or the people with private
swimming pools?” A. One in every 100 families own vacation
cottages, one in every 400 own private swimming pools.. .Q.
“WHAT ARE THE ODDS a 30-year-old bachelor can find a
wife?” A. His chances run 72 out of 100, says our Love and
War man. A 30-year-old woman’s chances run 55 out of 100.
CONSIDER THIS - The men of different nations behave
differently when they get too much to drink. The Frenchman
goes to sleep. The Italian looks around for a girl. The Britisher
tells jokes. The Russian cries. The German sings. The Irishman
fights. And the American spends. That is, buys rounds for
friends and strangers. Or so says a student of the matter.
PUZZLE - Can you think of five odd figures that add up to
14? That’s figures, not numbers, remember.
OYSTERS AND ROMANCE - Expect you’ve heard the
ancient claim that the eating of oysters tends to make a fellow
romantic. No, sir, still know of no conclusive proof that such
be true. However, a student of population trends points out
the birthrate in Brittany has been higher than anywhere else in
France, always. And it is widely known the gentlemen of
Brittany eat far more oysters than do other Frenchmen. More
on this matter later.
RAPID REPLIES: 1. Yes, Mrs. P., a can of pineapple
generally costs a little more in Hawaii than it costs on the
Mainland... 2. No, T. T., pollsters say just about half the
juniors who bear the same names as their fathers don’t much
care for it.

Almanac
For
Today
By United Press International
Today is Thursday, Dec. 11,
the 345th day of 1969 with 20 to
follow.
The moon is between its new
phase and first quarter.
The morning stars are Venus
and Jupiter.
The evening stars are Mercu
ry, Mars and Saturn.
On this day in history:
In 1907 President Theodore
Roosevelt announced he would
not be a candidate for another
term.
In 1930 effects of the
depression began to spread in
New York when the Bank of the
United States, including 60
branch banks, closed its doors.
In 1936 Britain’s King Ed
ward VIII abdicated his throne
to marry American divorcee
Wallis Warfield Simpson.
In 1941, four days after
Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl
Harbor, Congress declared war
on Germany and Italy.
A thought for the day: Lord
Macaulay said, “His imagina
tion resembled the wings of an
ostrich. It enabled him to run,
though not soar.”
THOUGHTS
“Terrors are turned upon
me; my honor is pursued as
by the wind, and my pros
perity has passed away like
a cloud.” —Job 30:15.

Some news
and views
This squabble is too bad
• It is too bad that State Auditor Ernest
Davis and Director Bill Burson of the Geor
gia Department of Family and Children's
Services (Welfare) have gotten into a
squabble. They are two of the most capable
and conscientious men in state govern
ment.
Poised, relaxed and well-informed
• President Nixon was poised, relaxed,
and exceptionally well-informed and ready
to answer questions at his news conference
this week. It is increasingly evident that he
is determined to clean up problems and
scandals in government instead of trying
to cover them up. The nation should be
thankful.
They need a helping hand
• The series of Griffin Daily News arti
cles on the Spalding County Department of
Family and Children's Services (Welfare)
has been informative. The nation's welfare
policies have their flaws and improvements
are in order, but we are impressed with the
dedication of the local staff and with the
shift in emphasis from the dole system to
self-help. Unquestionably there are indivi
duals who never will make it off welfare.
But the younger ones, the children, can be
come productive citizens. They need a
heloinn hand, one of the strongest of which
is incentive.
Fashion note: bop him in the head
• Muggings have gotten so bad in Ne w
York City that "Filly Billys" are on sale to
women. They come in assorted colors, are
two fe?t long, an inch and a quarter in dia
meter and weigh one pound. They may be
dangled from a gold chain on a dainty
wrist, or they can be used to bop men in the
head. Now isn't that something?
Total cost: whew! Repeat: whew!
• Did you know that the interest on the
national debt this fiscal year is sl7-billion?
This is more than the total cost of our fed
eral government in fiscal 1941, when we
were entering World War 11. Yes, TOTAL
cost of the ENTIRE federal government.
Whew!

Temptations
I am a Christian but I find it
very difficult to overcome
temptations. Can you help me?
L.C.
The Apostle Paul speaks of
this dilemma in his letter to the
Roman Christians, particularly
in the 7th chapter. Then he gives
the answer to the question in
one short sentence: “I thank
God through Jesus Christ our
Lord.” None of us can live a
victorious life in our own
strength. But ■ when we com
pletely surrender to Jesus
Christ, giving Him first place in
our hearts and lives, He takes
over for us. The Bible tells us
that He was tempted in every
way that we can be tempted, but
He never committed sin.
However, this enables Him to
fully understand our problems.
Then the Bible also tells us that
God is faithful and just and He
will never let us be tempted
above that which we are able to
bear, always providing the way
of escape for us. It is our job to
look for and use that way of
escape. One of the most won
derful of all of these promises is
found in Phillippians 2:13: “For
it is God which worketh in you
both to will and to do his good
pleasure.” The one thing we can
do is surrender to Him, and
even His Holy Spirit makes it
possible for us to do that. Then
God will give us both the will to
do right and the power to do it.
Give Him a try!
