Self-Help in Alleviating
Distress of Emphysema
By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT, M.D.
Q—What is emphysema?
What causes it? Will a nasal
decongestant relieve it?
What treatment do you rec
ommend? Where can I get
some literature on this sub
ject?
A—ln emphysema, the air
enters the lungs easily but
exhalation is obstructed. The
chief cause is air pollution,
especially cigarette smoking.
Nasal decongestants will not
help you. A treatment pro
gram would include a hu
midified aerosol containing
a drug to dilate the smaller
bronchial tubes, postural
draining (lying across a bed
with your head near the
floor to allow secretions to
flow out by gravity), elimi

fection that may be present
and special breathing exer
cises.
The latter are performed

Q—Could a lung transplant
be done for a patient with se
vere emphysema?
A—Space-age medicine has
not advanced that far yet.
Q—Can a doctor tell
whether a person has emphy
sema without taking an X
ray?
1 A—A correct diagnosis of
emphysema depends chiefly
on an evaluation of the symp
toms, characteristic breath
sounds heard through a
stethoscope and lung-func
tion tests. Although an X ray
may show a large chest and
evidence of increased air in
the lungs, these findings do
not in themselves make the
diagnosis but merely lend it
support.
Q—Should a person with
emphysema do any heavy
work?
A—When a person with
emphysema attempts heavy
work, he should learn to stop
short of extreme shortness of
breath, or at least to take
short periods of rest while
working.

11 Killed When Jet
Crashes Into Hangar
By RAYMOND C. MEANS
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UPI)-A
pilotless F 8 Crusader jet
smashed into a hanger at
Miramar Naval Air Station
Monday, killing 11 men and
injuring 14 others as it exploded
in a ball of fire.
Navy Lt. Cyrus M. Riddell,

Negro Veteran
Will Be Buried
In White Cemetery
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI)-
A federal judge has cleared the
way for a Negro Vietnam war
veteran to be buried in an all
white cemetery.
The soldier, Pfc. Bill H. Terry
Jr., had made a last request in
a letter home from the war
zone that he be buried in Elm
wood Cemetery because it was
located near his boyhood home.
He was killed in action July 3.
When his family attempted to
buy a burial plot at Elmwood
they were told the cemetery
was limited to the Caucasian
race, relatives claimed in a suit
against Elmwood.
In a 17-page ruling handed
down Monday, U. S. District
Judge Seybourn H. Lynne or
dered Elmwood to sell lots to
anyone who applied, regardless
of race.
Lynne’s ruling, based on an
1866 law, said cemetery rules,
regulations and deeds restrict
ing use of the facility to whites
were “void and of no legal ef
fect.”
The family had filed the suit
last summer seeking to have
the cemetery directed to sell
them a plot. The suit said the
family would have Terry’s body
exhumed from a black ceme
tery and transferred to Elm
wood.
The court action could have
widespread effect on other
white cemeteries in the South
since most are racially segre
gated, although Lynne said in
the ruling “covenants restrict
ing burial in cemeteries to Cau
casians are not a Southern or
Alabama phenomenon.”
lost oil pressure. He radioed for
emergency fire standby and a
few moments later ejected
about half a mile from a hugh
hangar on the base.
The $3 million aircraft,
traveling at about 225 miles an
hour, plowed through the north
doors of the repair hangar and
hurtled halfway down the
hangar’s length through a
tangle of workers and aircraft.
The Navy said at least $25
million damage was done to the
giant structure and six jets
inside.

P.O. 3.C. Gary R. Miller, who
was servicing a jet at the south
end of the hangar, watched the
jet slam through the doors,
“Somebody said ‘look,’ and an

of the hangar with giant flames

ing.”
Multiple explosions followed
the fire in the hangar, one of
three repair facilities at the air
base.
Richard Haight, editor of the
Miramar base newspaper, was
a block from the structure
when the crash occured.
Was Lots Os Heroism
“There was lots of heroism,”
he said. “There was plenty of
smoke billowing from both ends
of the hangar, but there was no
panic. I saw men rushing to the
assistance of their squadron
mates with no fear whatsoever.
Even when there were more
explosions it didn’t stop them,”
Haight said.
All of the injured and killed
were men and all but one of the
victims was believed to be
Navy personnel.
Riddell, picked up in an
isolated area near the base,
was taken to the base
dispensary and later released.
A Navy spokesman said
Riddell ejected from the plane
over Interstate 395, which runs
about one-half mile from the
base’s runway. The spokesman
said there was a “flame out”
and the jet lost power.

‘LaGrange Plan’
Studied By Others
LAGRANGE, Ga. (UPI) -La
Grange College has come up
with a scheduling plan that
gives students six weeks of win
ter vacation, and other schools
are considering adopting it.
Under the “La Grange Plan,”
students are off from Thanks
giving until after New Years.
The only drawback, among a
number of advantages, is the
fact that the new plan shortens
the summer vacation by about
two weeks, with classes begin
ning in September.
La Grange President Dr.
Waights G. Henry said the new
calendar saves multiple trans
portation costs for students
wishing to go home for both
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The long holiday also allows stu-

mas jobs and gives professors
more time to prepare winter
quarter courses.
The “La Grange Plan” is par
ticularly impressive to schools
operating on the quarter sys
tem. Most schools on the quar
ter system break for Thanks
giving, then return for weeks,'
during which they have final
exams, and break again for
Christmas.
Officials at the University of
Georgia, Columbus College, Val
dosta State and Berry have ex
pressed interest in the plan. A
number of schools at the recent
meeting of the Southern Asso
ciation of Colleges and Schools
in Dallas also commented fav
orably.
