Six Accused
Os Stealing
Auto Batteries
Six youths were arrested last
night while stealing batteries
from cars at Star Chevrolet
Company on 231 East Solomon
street, police said.
They were spotted by police
officers and arrested at the
scene. One of the youths tried to
escape but was captured at the
A&P parking lot.
Arrested were Troy Jester,
18, of 905 Freedman street;
Clifford Jester, 18, of 841 East
Solomon street; Ronald Gar
land, 19, of 223 Blanton street;
Luther James Bennie, 19, of
Route Four, Box 211; Andrew J.
Banks, 18, of 517 East Solomon
street; and Willie Ben Nelson
Jr., 17, of Florence place, At
lanta.
They were charged with theft
by taking and were being held in
the city jail.

Offers Courses
In Decorating
Griffin Tech announces that
courses in home decorating and
home sewing (dress
making) will be taught be
ginning the week of Jan. 5,1970.
The classes in home de
cora ling will meet one day a
week and will start Jan. 7. A
class in accessories will be
laughi from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
and a class in basic color and
design will be taught from 1 to 3
p.m.
The sewing classes will be''
laughi two days per week be
ginning Jan 5. Classes in basic
and intermediate sewing will be
laughi. Both day and evening
classes will be offered.
The cost will be $5.00 per
course. Anyone interested in en
rolling in these classes should
contact Griffin Tech, for further
information and a time
schedule for each class. ,

Smith Family
Funeral arrangements for
Mr. Cecil Wesley Smith, his
wife, Betty Jean Brison Smith,
and two-year-old daughter,
Anetta, will be announced by
Pittman Rawls Funeral Home
pending the arrival of the bodies
from Midland, Tex.
The Smiths were moving
from El Monte, Calif., to
Griffin, when fatally injured in
a traffic accident in Midland
yesterday.
Mr. Smith, a former resident
of Griffin, is survived by his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Effee
Smith of Griffin; seven sisters,
Mrs. E. T. Hatchett, Mrs.
Austin Chambers, Mrs. Riley
Shackelford, Mrs. Gladys
Harris, all of Griffin, Mrs. Allen
Thornton of Jackson, Mrs.
Bobby Phinazee and Mrs. David
Faulkner, both of Milner; three
brothers, E. A. Smith, Melvin
Smith, both of Griffin and
Charles Smith of Los Angeles,
Calif.
The Smith’s other two child
ren, John Rodrequis and
Benjamin Rodrequis, who were
accompanying them on their
trip here, were hospitalized in
the Midland hospital for treat
ment of injuries suffered in the
accident.
Mr. Rumble
BARNESVILLE - Mr. Smith
Rumble, 65, died early today at
his residence, 303 Forsyth
si reel, Barnesville, after an
illness of several months.
A native of Barnesville, he
was the son of the late Dr. Smith
Rumble and the late Anna Dar
den Rumble. After his gra
duation from Gordon Military
School Mr. Rumble attended
Mercer University. He was
associated with the Ritz
Theater in Barnesville and later
the Homewood Theater in
Homewood, Ala., until his
retirement.
Mr. Rumble is survived by a
sister, Miss Louise Rumble of
Barnesville; a sister-in-law,
Mrs. Darden Rumble of Atlanta
and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Wednesday at 2 o’clock
in the chapel of Haisten Funeral
Home in Barnesville. Dr.
Howard Ethington will officiate
and burial will be in Greenwood
cemetery. Friends may visit the
family at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Matt Haisten, 279 Spencer
si reel, Barnesville.

Nursery Has
Christmas Play
A Christmas play, “How
Wonderful That Christ Was
Born”, was presented by
Lovin’s Day Nursery. Mrs. Nell
Lovin, teacher, and Mrs. Eva
Manley, assistant teacher were
in charge.
Children having part on the
program were Karla Neill,
Scott Chesser, David Prothro,
Allen Scott, Lloyd Farr, Timmy
Garrett, Scott Cobb, Ted Evans,
Susan Wilson, Shanda Greene,
April Perkins, Cindy Cruse,
Cathy Head, Kim Collins, Kim
Beam and Lisa Pitts. The other
children took part in singing
Christmas carols, led by Mrs.
Manley. Mrs. Lovin narrated
the story.
Following the play, a
Christmas party was enjoyed
and gifts were distributed to the
children.

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-
Police said a young man Friday
simulated a gun in his coat
pocket and said to the teller at
the Security Pacific Saving and
Loan Co. here "This is a
stickup. Give me all your
money.”
“No, I won’t,” said the teller,
Miss Claudia Rivara, 25, “go
ahead and shoot.”
The two stood staring at each
other for several long moments.
The would-be robber finally
threw up his hands and said "I
can’t go through with it” as he
walked out.

David P. Elder, Spalding
County farmer and cattlemen,
has been elected as a director of
the Flint River Production
Credit Association, according to
Grover C. Worsham Jr.,
general manager.
The Flint River Association, a
farmer owned and operated
credit cooperative since 1933,
provided 311 farmer-members
with $5,592,000 in short and
intermediate term loans in
Butts, Clayton, DeKalb,
Fayette, Fulton, Henry, Lamar,
Monroe, Pike, Spalding, Taylor,
and Upson counties thie year
with offices in Thomaston and
Jonesboro. Plans have been an
nounced for the opening of an
office in Griffin by the end of
this year.
Mr. Elder is also a Spalding
County Commissioner, directot
and past president of the
Federal Land Bank
Association, director of
Spalding County Farm Bureau,
supervisor of Towaliga Soil and
Water Conservation District,
member of Chamber of Com
merce, member of the County-
Line United Methodist Church,
and other civic and community
organizations.
Mr. Elder is married to the
former Miss Mildred Lindsay of
Atlanta, Ga. They have two
daughters who attend the
Griffin-Spalding County School.
Mr. and Mrs. Elder and family
reside on their farm in the
Birdie Community of Spalding
County.

—Bill Parkhurst, 27, watched a
small plastic box move along a
conveyor belt leading to the
town dump’s crushing machine.
On a whim he picked up the
box and opened it.
“I was stunned when I
realized the value of what was
in the box,” he said. Parkhurst
found $l,lOO worth of bonds and
savings certificates which he
gave to police.
