WARMS HER CANARY
BOURNEMOUTH, England
(UPI)—An irate husband com
plained that his electricity bill
was too high.
An electric company repre
sentative checked the meter
and said nothing was wrong,
but the husband complained
again.
Then his wife confessed that
every night she tiptoed down
stairs and turned on the
electric oven, leaving the door
open, so the heat would keep
her pet canary warm through
the night.

Christmas In Vietnam
By WALTER WHITEHEAD
SAIGON (UPD-U.S. and
South Vietnamese troops joined
Communist soldiers today in a
Christmas truce marred by the
deaths of four Americans in a
mine explosion.
The Allies began their 24-hour
cease-fire at 6 p.m. Christmas
Eve (5 a.m., EST), 17 hours
after the Viet Cong’s three-day
standdown had begun following
a rash of terror attacks that
killed at least three Vietnamese
and wounded 66.
The costliest of the pre-truce
terrorism, late Tuesday, saw a
Vietnamese boy plant a bomb
amid a crowd of 300 persons in
a churchyard on the northern
coast. He walked away and the
bomb exploded, killing two
Vietnamese and wounding 62,
many of them children.
Military spokesmen reported
“a few” guerrilla violations
after the cease-fire began but
said none was considered
significant. Allied commanders
kept patrols in the field with
others to fire only if fired upon.
Four Gls from one of these
patrols were killed when one of
them stepped on a land mine 24
miles northwest of Saigon just
after the Communist truce went
into effect. Another five Ameri
cans and two government
soldiers were wounded.
This was the only fatal
incident reported since the
beginning of the Viet Cong and
North Vietnamese cease-fire at
1 a.m. today (noon Tuesday
EST).
U.S. 852 bombers maintained
their attacks until just before
the later-starting Allied truce,
hitting suspected infiltration
trails along the Cambodian
border and along the Laotian
border in the northern quarter.

I THE NIGHT &jk |
I BEFORE CHRISTMAS |
tytf Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house ’w
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; *s®
& The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, to
uff In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; TO
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, TO
W While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; to
And Mamma in her ’kerchief, and I in my cap, to
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
w When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, TO
wf I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. TO
M Away to the window I flew like a flash, TO
w Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. to
w The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow TO
I®* Gave the luster of midday to objects below, TO
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, TO
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, TO
With a little old driver so lively and quick, TO
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. TO
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, TO
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: TO
“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer, now, Prancer and Vixen! TO
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on Donder and Blitzen! TO
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! TO
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!’* TO
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, TO
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas, too. m
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof -»w
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. ®
As I drew in my head, and was turning around, @
I Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. @
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, W
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; to
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, to
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. to
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His checks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! to
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, TO
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; TO
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, TO
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; TO
He had a broad face and a little round belly TO
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. TO
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, TO:
ux And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
g A wink of his eye and a twist of head
g Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. o
g He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, A
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
g And laying his finger aside of his nose, R
g And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
M He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night.” @
