For a Key Job, Try Office Machines
By ERNIE HOOD
Distributed by NEA
More than 40,000 job open
ings are expected each year,
all through the 19705, in such
employment categories as
billing machine operators,
adding and calculating ma
chine operators, mail pre
paring and handling ma
chine operators, embossing
machine operators, duplicat
ing machine operators, oper
ators of tabulating machines
and related equipment and
sorting machine operators.
Most of these opportunities
will arise as business organ

size and number and the vol

duplicating and other work
continues to mount.
There are an estimated
350,000 office machine oper

What Was Jesus Really Like?
Religion In America 1

What was He really like, this
Jesus of Nazareth whose birth
the world is celebrating during
the 12 days of Christmastide?
Although his name is familiar
to nearly everyone—so familiar '
it has become a casual
expletive—the man himself
remains, for many, a shadowy

Even those who worship Him |
as Lord and Savior are in per- .
petual danger of forgetting that ,
Jesus—whatever else he may (
have been—was fully and au- I
thentically human.
From the earliest days of the
church until now, there has
been a tendency among pious i
folk to feel that it is somehow a
little blasphemous to speak of
Jesus as a man who got tired
and sweaty, hungry and discou
raged, lonely and frightened,
even as other men do.
Slighting Humanity is Heresy
But the slighting of Jesus’
humanity is not peity: It is
heresy, and has been so labeled
by the church since the Council
of Chalcedon in 451 A.D.
One thing we can say
positively about the man Jesus
is that He was a real person
who lived and taught and died
in Palestine about 2,000 years
ago. Every now and then,
comeone comes up with the
notion that Jesus was a purely
mythical figure, like Hercules
or Beowulf. But this won’t
wash. There are references to

sary.
For many beginning posi
tions, however, a general
knowledge of the equipment
used is usually regarded as
sufficient. Public and pri
vate school courses in the
operation of office machines
are helpful, and business
arithmetic is valuable for
the many jobs involving
work with figures. It is also
helpful for office machine
operators to have some
knowledge of typing or to be
able to operate more than
one type of office equipment,
since many office positions
entail varied assignments.
Finger dexterity, co-ordi

Jesus not only in Christian
literature but also in Roman
and Jewish histories. “No
reputable historian today
doubts the existence of Jesus,”
says Prof. John Knox.
We know much more about
His personality than we do
about His appearance. The
Gospels make clear that He
was capable both of great
toughness and great tenderness.
He was courageous in His
confrontations with the rich and
the might, compassionate in
His dealings with the poor and
the weak. No matter how
weary or harassed He was, He
never retired into a shell of
self-concern. He always cared.
Was Essentially Happy
Although His sensitivity to
the needs of others made Him
share the misery of every
suffering person he encoun
tered, He was not essentially a
sad person. On the contrary, He
radiated a contagious happiness
—a sense of the sheer joy of
living.
Perhaps the worst insult
which people unintentionally
direct at Jesus is to think of
erators to have sufficient
sense of mathematical rela
tionships to enable them to
detect quickly obvious errors
in computations.
Most employers follow a
promotion-f r o m-within pol
icy, so there is a definite ca
reer ladder for newcomers.
Salaries vary, depending
upon locality, type of ma
chine operated and degree
of schooling.

Him as “meek and mild.”
Actually, He was just the
opposite. He was a bold and
outspoken man who rebelled
against convention and tram
pled heavily on the tenderest
corns of the establishment.
Jesus can be worshipped,
loved, admired, rejected or
hated. But He cannot easily be
ignored.
