OPEN QUESTIONS -1. Why do atheists seem to prefer the
West Coast? They’re far more numerous there than elsewhere
nationwide? 2. Does any animal besides man sleep regularly on
its back? 3. Are there any blond, blue-eyed Arabians?
CREDIT - Approximately 6,000 businessmen hold credit
cards to a now-defunct pleasure palace in Chicago. That’s
right, credit cards. Lawmen closed down that cunning
operation last year. But they have yet to interfere with the
action of a Miami sauna, run by glandular girls from the north
country. It likewise has issued credit cards to a most likely list
of wealthy fellows, I’m told. What that place needs is a motto.
How about “Hot rocks for Gotrocks”? A little too crude? All
right, maybe, “Fry now, pay later.” No, let’s give up the
whimsy and move on.
EXERCISE - When a man strains to loosen a tight bolt with
a wrench, that’s isometric exercise. When a man walks half the
day, that’s isotonic exercise. Believe isometric exercise must be
better to lose weight than isotonic. Certainly you see fat
postmen now and then, but never do you see fat car
mechanics, never ever.
NOBODY, NOT EVEN the fathers of brides, pays for as
much champagne as the airlines... PROBABLY THE MOST
admired American Indian in his tribe is that rare brave who
can grow a bushy beard. . . SUICIDES ARE four times as high
after age 60 as before age 20.
CUSTOMER SERVICE: Q. “If a man gets his hair cut in the
dark of the moon, I’ve heard, he won’t need as many haircuts.
Is that true?” A. Now you’re the fourth customer this week
who has asked that. Where do you suppose the notion got
started? Am assigning our Old Superstitions man to analyze
the matter. Will report his findings shortly, if not too
offensive.
THE OLD MUSIC - The days of the hummable songs are
gone. Too bad. Even “Gentle on My Mind,” already out of
date, is too intricate. Maybe the last of the magnetic melodies
was “Hello, Dolly!” Probably was. To mourn the passing of a
time, now that’s a waste, 1 know. But who can help it? I grew
up on “My Blue Heaven” and “Embraceable You” and
“Walkin’ My Baby Back Home” and “Deep Purple” and “I’ve
Got You Under My Skin ” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and
“That Old Black Magic" and “Sunday, Monday or Always”
and, nevermind, it’s a cumbersome list. No, this is not a
longing for lost youth, absolutely not. 1 just miss the melodies.
Why else would a man go around humming nothing but the
only two decent tunes to come out in recent years - “Fly the
Friendly Skies of United” and “Pan Am Makes the Going
Great”?

Almanac
For
Today
By United Press international
Today is Wednesday Dec. 24,
Christmas Eve, the 358th day of
1969 with seven to follow.
The moon is full.
The morning stars are Venus
and Jupiter.
The evening stars are Mercu
ry, Mars and Saturn.
On this day in history:
In 1814, a Treaty of Peace
was signed between the United
States and Great Britain ending
the war of 1812.
In 1942, Admiral Darlan,
French administrator of North
Africa, was assassinated by a
sympathizer of the French
Vichy regime of World War 11.
In 1943, General Eisenhower
was appointed commander-in
chief of Allied forces in the
planned invasion of Europe.
In 1951, the United Nations
proclaimed the North African
nation of Libya independent.
In 1968, the astronauts of
America’s Apollo 8 sent tele
vised photographs of the moon
back to earth.
A thought for the day:
American poet Edwin Markham
said, “Why build these cities
glorious if man unbuilded goes?
In vain we build the world,
unless the builder also grows.”
THOUGHTS
A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and
left without walls.—Prov
erbs 25:28.

sires and fears, is more than
a king.—John Milton, Eng
lish poet.

ANSWER, JR

Largest Group
What is the largest Christian
denomination in the world? Our
family had a discussion on this,
and I knew you would know.
J.H.
Catholics number over 500
million, Protestants 230 million,
and Eastern Orthodox about 200
million. Among the Protestant
groups in America, the Baptist
and Methodist are the largest.
But, as Gilbert Roxburgh, a
Catholic, recently said, “Size
does not make much difference
in religious groupings; com
mitment does,” and I agree.
Some of the smaller denomina
tions show larger per capita
giving, larger rate of growth,
and often, a deeper dedication. (
Sometimes when a denomina
tion grows enormously, and be
comes institutionally structur- ,
ed, it loses some of its spiritual
warmth and power. The Church l
of Laodicea, one of the richest
and largest of Asia Minor in
early church history, was con- 1
demned by Christ in Revelation.
God does not judge us by size,
or wealth, or even our outward
evidences of religiosity. The
most scathing rebukes Jesus
ever gave were to the most reli
gious people of his day, the
Pharisees — and they were also
the largest sect.
So in denominations, as well
as with people, “Man looks upon
outward appearances, but God
looketh upon the heart.” This, of
course, doesn’t mean that size,
or wealth are evil, per se. But, it
does indicate that churches are
judged by God according to
their depth of consecration, and
not by their numbers.
WORLD ALMANAC
Americans working in
major cities throughout the
United States know the feel
ing of being crowded into
trains, buses and subway
cars during rush-hour.
Mass transit authorities in t
Japan face an even greater
problem in transporting
commuters. The World Al- i
manac says. Officials in
Tokyo decided the solution
to the overcrowded condi
tion was to hire “pushers.”
During rush-hour. the
“pushers” shove passen
gers into the already
jammed trains.
