Taiwan road chiseled through solid marble
By MURRAY J. BROWN
UPI Travel Editor
HUALIEN, Taiwan (UPI)-
It took nearly four years and
about 200 lives before an army
of workers completed the final
link in Taiwan’s East-W'est high
way. Today, the road chiseled
mainly by hand through marble
mountains must rank as one of
the most scenic and spectacular
in the world.
The road of tar and gravel,
barely wide enough for two
vehicles to pass, climbs through

the wildly-beautiful Taroka
Gorge only a few miles north of
this town on the esat coast, east
It twists through gigantic
masses of solid marble up to
2,000 feet high and as narrow
as 30 feet apart. It clings to the
sides of precipices, burrows
through scores of tunnels and
under overhangings crags, and
crosses bridges of marble span
ning roaring rapids and quiet
pools.
I visited Taroka Gorge with
other American writers as guests
of Trans World Airlines in
connection with its inauguration
of new services across the Pacific
and around the world. TWA
now flies between Hong Kong
and Los Angeles with stops in
Taipei, Okinawa, Guam and
Honolulu.
It was one of the highlights
of our visit to this Nationalist
Chinese island off the China
mainland. Our guide said the
road linking central and eastern
Taiwan was built by former
soldiers who followed General
issimo Chiang Kai-shek here
after the Communists seized con-
trol of their homeland in 1949.
We made the 15-mile drive
through the gorge to the Tien
Hsiang Lodge on the other side
in a sightseeing bus. At several
points, the road widened and we
got out to take photographs.
There is one stop where huge
were hewn through
a solid marble tunnel. There
also is a narrow path along the
edge of the cliff. You can look
straight down to the boulder
strewn rapids, upwards at the
soaring mountaintops, or across
the chasm at mysterious grottoes
high up in sheer walls of marble. 1
We stopped also at the Eternal
Spring Shrine, a jewel-like
dedicated to the workers who
lost their lives. It sits atop a
wooded hill overlooking a beau
tiful waterfall.
For visitors with more time,
the Tien Hsiang Lodge offers
overnight accommodations
(doubles from about $6 to sl3
U.S. with bath) and, according
to its brochure, “matchless
beauty” and a hot spring swim
ming pool. Breakfast is 75 cents,
lunch $1.50 and dinner $1.75
U.S. (The rate of exchange is $1
U.S. for S4ONT, or New Taiwan
dollars.)
After lunch at the lodge, we
doubled back through the gorge.
Cute maids
On the way, we stopped at
the South Sea Gardens where
cute-as-a-button Ami maids per
formed a series of aborigine
dances in an open-sided thatch I
roof arena. They wore fan- ;
like headpieces of feathers, neck- 1
laces of stones and bones, fringed 1
skirts over leggings, and wristlets 1
and anklets of bells. 1
Some of the girls wore bright :
splashes of paint on their faces, <
much as the American Indian
once did. And a few of their
dances were surprisingly similar
to those of the original inhabi
tants of North America.
The Amis are descendants of
one of the original tribes of Tai
wan and many still observe the
old customs and traditions.
The girls closed the show with
a delightful rendition of Auld
Lang Syne in English and Chi
nese and then scattered among
the audience to sell handmade
Taiwanese dolls and other
souvenirs.
The Gardens also has a fine
handicraft center, and a restaur
ant with floors, walls, tables,
refuse receptacles and other fur
nishings made of marble. The
shops offered beautiful marble
vases for as low as $5 and jade
and-gold ringsf for $ 10, among
other bargains.
We flew between Taipei and
Hudalein ($10.20 U.S. round
trip) aboard a China Air Lines
DC4, a 40-minute flight over
soaring green-clad mountains and
neat terraced farmlands. Escort
ed tours by plane and bus are
offered by scores of agencies in
Taipei.
On our return trip to Taipei
we lost one of the four engines
but most of the passengers did
not find out until after we
landed without incident.
Eight international airlines fly
into Taipei from Hong Kong,
Tokyo, Manila and other major
cities in the east and west.
Americans flying on other air
lines in the Far East may be
able to include a stopover here
without extra charge under cer
tain conditions. Check the air
lines or travel agency.
Ohio's aerial contribution
COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI)-
Ohio claims the honor of being
the birthplace of three pioneers
in the air and beyond.
Orville and Wilbur Wright
conducted pioneer experiments
in aviation in their Dayton, Ohio,
bicycle shop before making the
first successful powered glide
plane flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C.,
in 1903.
