PERSONAL FINANCE
Boost Purchasing Power
By Waiting for Sales
By CARLTON SMITH and
RICHARD PUTNAM PRATT
If you can somehow in
crease the purchasing power
of your spendable income,
it’s just like more income
right? So if inflation has got
you groggy—or if you’d just
like to “live better for less”
—give yourself a raise in
purchasing power by learn
ing to be a crafty shopper.
Authorities on consumer
spending say that American
families, with few exceptions,
could save 15 to 30 per cent
on their annual purchases by,
taking advantage of seasonal
discounts. The traditional
seasonal sales recur every
year, with the regularity of
geese going south or robins
heralding spring. If you keep
the calendar of sales handy,
for foresighted planning of
family and personal needs,
you can give your “real in
come” a substantial boost.
January: “White sales” on
linens and towels give you
big markdowns, best buys of
the year. Prices of winter
clothing are slashed in post-
Christmas sales. Many
stores mark down appliances
and housewares during Jan
uary; watch for their ads.
February: Generally a sale
month for furniture and
home furnishings, bedding,
china, glass and silver.
March: If you need garden
supplies, watch the papers
for special preseason sales.
Some stores also run pre
season promotions on spring
clothing. Again; watch for
their ads.
April: After-Easter sales
offer women good bargains
on spring coats, suits and ac
cessories — and frequently
good buys in men’s clothing
also.
May: Beginning even ear
lier—in late April—supplies
for traditional spring clean
ing and fix-up are promoted
via special sales. Watch for
them and save on cleaning
supplies, paints and the like.

CITATION
To Whom It May Concern:
The application of Mrs. Mary
J. Cato, as guardian of Neva
Jane Henderson, ' Barbara
Ann Henderson and Pamela
Ray Henderson, minors, has
been filed in this Court for an
order allowing her to sell certain
real property owned by said
minors for the purpose of pay

of reinvesting the remainder for
the support, maintenance and
education of said wards. All in
terested persons are hereby cit

said order should not be grant

This January 9, 1970.
GEO. C. IMES, Ordinary,
Spalding County, Georgia.
June: A month of furniture
sales and many stores will
also mark down major ap
pliances. In the latter part
of the month, the sales on
summer clothing begin.
July: The post-Fourth of
July sales are clearances of
all kinds of summer items—
vacation and resort wear,
hot-weather sports equip
ment, air-conditioners, etc.
August: Prices are slashed
on the strictly summer goods
that haven’t moved by now,
and there are markdowns on
end-of-the-season items such
as gardening equipment,
camping gear, patio furni
ture August is also the
month of the midyear white
sales.
September: Merchants
competing for the back-to
school business run specials
to draw customers in. Watch
newspapers for the ads.
Special sales for ad-watchers
also on certain lines of
housewares.
October: If you know
prices and shop carefully,
you can save on a wide
variety of needs at the Co
lumbus Day sales—but be
choosy. Toward the end of
the month, stores begin of
fering specials on furs, silver
and quality gift items to get
the business of the early-bird
Christmas shoppers.
November: Very good buys
on, oddly, winter clothes.
The stores’ buyers, faced
with restocking for the
Christmas rush, now know
which styles are the fast
movers, and they try to clear
shelves and racks to make
room for them. Also the

buy. Try using the seasonal
sales instead, next time
around.
