IT’S CLAIMED the three most widely recognized
trademarks in the world are “Coke,” “B. V. D.” and
“Singer.” .. . POWERFUL MAGNETS can throw migrating
birds off their course, that has been proved.... A MAKER OF
feminine undergarments says, “I don’t know why, but almost
all the bras sold in Hawaii are size 34 B.” ... IT’S SIMPLE, in
the wild animal world, the vegetarians sip water, the
meat-eaters lap it.... THE SURVEY-TAKERS SAY only one
college girl in three will kiss on the first date. And I am
Genghis Khan.
LOVE AND WAR - You’d think the report about a woman
who kneels down on the floor and takes off her husband’s
shoes should be filed under “Love," would you not? That’s
what I thought when a Sacramento subscriber so described his
wife’s nightly routine. It turns out, however, she does not
engage in this tender practice when he arrives home, but only
when he tries to go back out. File it under “War.”
OPEN QUESTION - Is there any evidence to support the
old claim that Adolf Hitler once was a house painter?
CONSIDER THIS - Married men make more money than
widowers. Widowers make more money than divorced men.
Divorced men make more money than separated men.
Separated men make more money than single men. In all ages.
On the average. So say the statisticians.
CUSTOMER SERVICE - Q. “When a gentleman is walking
down the street with two women, he should be between them,
right?” A. That’s not the way I heard it. The manners experts
say he ought to walk on the outside, so he can talk to either
one without turning his back on the other.... Q. “WHICH
HAVE the longer life expectancy - tall men or short men?” A.
Up to the age of 40, more tall men than short men die. After
that, though, the tall men seem to live longer.
NARCOTICS - Man for man, there were 10 times as many
drug addicts nationwide 55 years ago as there are today. One
out of every 400 grownups then was making some sort of
scene with hard narcotics. Mail order houses - specifically,
Sears Roebuck & Co. - sold tablets to help the poor plungers
put away their needles. Listen, Cynthia, just about any retiree
you meet can tell you more about turning on with opiates
than your bearded boyfriend will ever find out. And the old
ranch hands who know loco weed when they see it still
outnumber all the petty, paltry, puny pot-smokers in your
class. Oh come on, stop bawling, honey, 1 didn’t mean to hurt
your ego, you’re a real sophisticated young lady.

The Treasury has gone

Women are the one mi

Almanac
For
Today
By United Press International
Today is Monday Jan. 19, the
19th day of 1970 with 346 to
follow.
The moon is in its first
quarter.
The morning stars are
Mercury, Venus and Jupiter.
The evening stars are Mars
and Saturn.
On this day in history:
In 1861 Georgia seceded from
the Union.
In 1938 General Franco’s
Nationalist air force killed 700
civilians when it bombed
Barcelona and Valencia, Spain.
In 1955 Dwight D. Eisenhower
held the first presidential news
conference covered by both
moving pictures and TV came
ras.
In 1968 President Lyndon B.
Johnson named Clark Clifford
secretary of defense to succeed
Robert McNamara.
In 1968 two airliners were
hijacked to Cuba. One had 171
persons aboard.
A thought for the day: Oscar
Wilde wrote, “As long as war is
regarded as wicked, it will
always have its fascination.
When it is looked upon as
vulgar it will cease to be
popular.”
THOUGHTS
Let no one deceive him
self. If any one among you
thinks that he is wise in this
age, let him become a fool
that he may become wise.—

point
We hope this
trend catches on
The Griffin city government showed one
trait of bigness last week when it publical
ly admitted it had made a mistake.
The city commission in a public statement
said they had fumbled the ball in not mak
ing clear their intent and instructions as to
what was involved in an increase of busi
ness license fees.
They could have squirmed and hedged
are hidden behind a lot of verbage in an
effort to hide the goof. But instead, they
openly admitted the error of their ways and
stated their readiness to correct the situa
tion.
The act was a refreshing one. Most of us
don't like to admit the mistakes we make.
To do so most of the time takes courage.
We commend the commissioners on their
forthrightness in "telling it like it is."
We hope this policy will continue.
Maybe it will catch on in other areas of
government on local, state and national
levels.
Japan's Problem —
Too Much Rice
The Japanese find themselves in a dilemma Americans
have long been familiar with—food surpluses.
Ten years ago Japan was a major importer of rice, the
staple of the Orient. This year Japanese farmers expect
to harvest a bumper crop of some 14 million tons, about 10
per cent above the nation’s needs.
The surplus can’t be exported because the official Japa
nese price for rice is about double the price in the free
world market. Evidently there are reasons why it can’t
be given away, either. Thus it will have to be added to
existing stockpiles of about six million tons, much of
which is rotting.
Even as in America, not only more efficient farming but
liberal government subsidies have contributed to the situa
tion. Japan’s rice subsidy bill this year will rise to around
$825 million, exclusive of storage costs.
And as we have learned, the crop subsidy steamroller,
once set in motion, is hard to stop. Even though certain
other foods, such as vegetables, are in short supply in
Japan and command high prices, Japanese farmers are
farther ahead growing rice and collecting the subsidy.
Japanese politicians, like their American counterparts, are
reluctant to alienate the powerful farm vote.
Food surplus is a problem, but all countries should have
a similar one. In the face of statistical certainties regard
ing world population increase, it’s one problem not likely
to endure.

Social Life
Can a teenager be saved with
out giving up his social life?
H.C.
Yes. He doesn’t need to give
up that part of his social life
which is good and wholesome.
Some young people have the
idea that God is a joy-killer —
that anything that is fun is
wrong. This simply is not true.
The word “joy” occurs over and
over again in the Scriptures,
and in the New Testament par
ticularly. There is every indica
tion that God wants us to enjoy
life — in fact, it indicates that
the only true pleasure is enjoy
ed by those who have accepted
Christ.
And another thing: to be a
Christian doesn’t mean that you
become a religious snob and
shun your former friends. Your
circle of friends is your oppor
tunity to “let your light shine for
Christ”. They, like you, are
looking for real meaning in life,
and it is your privilege and duty
to share your new-found faith
with them. I know you will be
reluctant to do this. So was I.
But I found that when I dared to
put in a word for Christ that it
struck a response with my
friends. From that day to this, I
have made bold to put in a good
word for Christ, and when I do, I
find that people appreciate it,
and rarely resent it. We have a
notion that religion is a private
and secret matter. But our Lord
said: “Let your light shine be
fore men, that they may see
your good works and glorify
your Father which is in hea
ven.”
