Cancer Unit
Maps Crusade
The American Cancer
Society, Spalding County Unit,
kicked off preparations for the
1970 Education-Funds Crusade
in a Griffin meeting of the
Crusade Advisory Committee,
according to W. F. Myers,
Crusade chairman.
Purpose of the meeting was to
discuss plans for the spring
Crusade, which will run from
the last week in March through
April.
Myers emphasized to his
committee members that,..the
Education-Funds Crusade will
focus equally on cancer educa
tion and fund-raising. Volunteer
crusaders will be asked to dis
tribute educational literature
and discuss cancer’s seven
Danger Signals as they ask for
donations.
Funds raised in the 1970
Crusade will go to cancer
research and to the support of
the educational and patient ser
vices programs of the Society.
According to Myers, volun
teer workers who can help out in
the West Poplar street office or
in their homes with ACS work
are badly needed.
Russell Thinks
Oswald Was
Not Alone
WASHINGTON (UPl)—Sen.
Richard B. Russell, D-Ga., a
member of the Warren Commis
sion which investigated the
death of President John F.
Kennedy, believes Lee Harvey
Oswald was not alone in plan
ning the assassination, the
Washington Post reported today.
Although Russell appeared to
agree with the commission’s
findings that Oswald fired the
shots that killed Kennedy, he
said “too many things...caused
me to doubt that he planned it
all by himself,” according to
the newspaper.
The Washington Post story
was based on one of a series
of taped television interviews to
be broadcast next month by tel
evision station WSB-TV in At
lanta.
In the interview, Russell said
some of the factors which in
fluenced his doubts were Os
wald’s sojourn in the Soviet city
of Minsk which he identified as
“the principal center for edu
cating Cuban students”, and
some of Oswald’s trips to Mexi
co City.
Other factors were “a num
ber of discrepancies in the evi
dence, or as to his means of
transportation, the luggage he
had and whether or not anyone
was with him,” the Post report
ed.
Russell, one of seven mem
bers of the commission headed
by Earl Warren who was then
chief justice, said his doubts
led him to insist on an inser
tion in the final report before
he would sign it.
The insertion said, “Because
of the difficulty of proving neg
atives to a certainty the possi
bility of others being involved
with either Oswald or Ruby
(Jack Ruby who assassinated
Oswald) cannot be established
categorically, but if there is
any such evidence it has been
•beyond the reach of all the in
vestigative agencies and re
sources of the United States
and has not come to the atten
tion of this commission.”
