Surgical Removal Needed
In Cancerous Mole Cases
By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT, M.D.
Q —l have several dark
brown moles on my back.
What causes them? Is there
any way they can be re
moved other than by sur
gery?
A—The moles are heredi
tary. It is best not to re
move this type of mole un
less it appears to be growing
larger or is subject to irrita
tion by your clothing. These
moles are almost always be
nign. They may be removed
by irradiation with Grenz
rays or by freezing with car
bon dioxide snow.
Q—What are the charac
teristics of a cancerous
mole? What treatment is
best?
A—This type of mole is
likely to be slate gray, black
or dark blue. Usually, it
causes no trouble if you let
it alone but, if it becomes ir
ritated, ulcerated or starts
to enlarge, it has very likely
changed from a precancer
ous to a cancerous stage.
This is especially apt to hap
pen if the mole is on the sole
of a foot, palm of a hand or
near the groin. All such
moles should be removed
surgically.
Q—How old must a person
be before he can have a
birthmark removed? What
is the upper age limit for
such an operation?
A—lt is wise to wait until
a child is three or four years
old to see whether the birth
mark will disappear by it
self. If it doesn’t, it may be
removed at any age, pro
vided your surgeon thinks
removal is advisable.
Q—Our boy, 15, has a red
birthmark on his cheek.
When he was nine months
old, a plastic surgeon told us
it would probably disappear
before he was 7. When it was
still present at age 9, another
plastic surgeon advised
against a skin graft because
of the difficulty in matching
the exact color of the sur
rounding skin. Do you know
of any new treatment for
this condition?

Clark’s Offers
‘Raincheck’
To Customers
A new “raincheck” guarantee
policy has been announced by
Clark’s Discount Department
Stores for all advertised
specials.
Effective immediately, a
customer will be issued a “rain
check” should any advertised
item be sold out. The “rain
check” will entitle the customer
to buy the item at the advertised
price after the store’s stock has
been replenished.
“The stores are always
heavily stocked with the ad
vertised items but there are
some instances in which a store
will sell out. The “raincheck’ is
our guarantee that all ad
vertised specials are available
at the advertiesed prices,” says
Fred R. Silverstein, vice presi
dent and general manager of
Cook United, Inc., parent
company of the Clark stores.
Cook United, Inc. operates 86
discount department stores
throughout the nation.
The “raincheck” policy is one
of a number of new mer
chandising improvements of
fered by Clarks since they have
been acquired by Cook United,
Silverstein adds.
A program of remodeling and
expansion has been undertaken
at all stores. The hardlines
departments have been ex
panded to better meet the needs
of do-it-yourselfers and crafts
men, Silverstein says. Soft
goods departments have also
been expanded and upgraded.
The Clark stores will be offering
the people a new concept in
shopping convenience.

Meanwhile, Chairman John

in Washington his committee
would investigate the structural
soundness of the controversial
planes before authorizing any
further funds for them.
