ONLY WOMEN with brown or green eyes should tint their
hair red. That’s the contention of a beauty expert who insists
unnaturally red hair makes blue-eyed women look
older. . . . MAYBE YOU KNEW it was the Chinese, not the
Italians, who invented spaghetti, but did you know it was
likewise the Chinese, not the Germans, who invented
sauerkraut? . . . ACCIDENT RECORDS indicate it is also a
fact an estimated 64,000 women last year were injured when
some portion of their anatomies got caught in washing
machine wringers.
CARDIGAN - There he sat, shivering in the cold Crimea,
thinking how dandy it would be to own a long-sleeved sweater
that buttoned down the front. So he sent knitting instructions
back to England to get such a thing. I refer to James Thomas
Brudenell, the Seventh Earl of Cardigan, who originated that
article of apparel which now bears his name. Oh, if ever there
were a man who should have stuck to his knitting, it was Lord
Cardigan. Unfortunately, he did not. Instead, in a magnificent
moment of miscalculation, he led the charge of the Light
Brigade.
OPEN QUESTION - Can a hummingbird fly upside down?
LANGUAGE MAN - The 12 most persuasive words in the
English language are: you, money, save, new, results, health,
easy, safety, love, discovery, proven and guarantee. Or such is
the claim of researchers in the Yale psychology department.
No salesman should forget this.
CUSTOMER SERVICE -- Q. “What percentage of our
country’s babies are bom to unwed mothers?” A. About 7 per
cent. ... Q. “IS CAB CALLOWAY his real name?” A. Cabell
Calloway is... .Q. “WHAT STATE has the least crime?” A.
North Dakota. . . . Q. “HOW MUCH MONEY does the average
doctor net now?” A. About $33,000 a year. ... Q. “IS
THERE ANY species of animal life in which the males have
the babies?” A. Only one I know of is the seahorse.
MARRIAGE - “Weddings keep getting bigger,” mourns a
contemporary, “and the costs soar out of sight.” True enough.
Matrimony is a mighty money matter, sure enough. Still, none
of today’s weddings compare with that ceremony at the
Middle East city of Susa in the year 324 B. C. There in one
performance on a single afternoon, Alexander the Great saw to
it that 10,000 Macedonian soldiers married 10,000 Persian
girls. What this cost in the coin of the realm I cannot say, but
time is money, too, you know, and it certainly tied up the
evening for a lot of people.
RAPID REPLY - Yes, miss, a penguin swims about twice as
fast as a salmon, usually.

Today is Tuesday Jan. 20, the
20th day of 1970 with 345 to
follow.
The morning stars are
Mercury, Venus and Jupiter.
The evening stars are Mars
and Jupiter.
On this day in history:
In 1801 President John Adams
appointed John Marshall of
Virginia Chief Justice of the
United States.
In 1892 students at the
Springfield, Mass., YMCA
played the first official basket
ball game. Dr. James Naismith
invented the game to provide
indoor exercise.
In 1936 Britain’s King George
V died.
In 1965 Lyndon Baines
Johnson was inaugurated for
his first elected term as
President.
In 1969 Richard Nixon was
inaugurated as the nation’s 37th
President.
A thought for the day:
American educator Nicholas
Murray Butler said, “An expert
is one who knows more and
more about less and less.”

They want to be
part of solution
The WMU at the First Baptist Church
and the Griffin-Spalding School System
both are to be commended for instituting a
kindergarten program for underprivileged
children.
Hopefully, it will be in operation by next
month.
It will offer some type of classroom exper
ience to 60 to 75 youngsters who would
otherwise enter the first grade next fall
with no conception of what school is all
about.
The WMU asked the school system,
"What can we do to help in this transition
period the system faces next fall?"
Supt. D. B. Christie suggested the pre
school classes for the underprivileged.
We know the program will benefit the
students. It could keep some from becom
ingdropouts. ‘
The joint project is an example of what
can be done by people who want to be part
of the solution instead of part of the prob
lem.
Take A Walkl
THE WINDER NEWS
The best aavice your doctor could
give you might be to take a walk -
regularly. A study of Americans, and
their daily exercise, was revealing in
that it showed that we were literally
riding ourselves to the hospital and to
poor physical condition.
Why is that Europeans, with a les
ser standard of living and fewer auto
mobiles, are in better physical condition?
Why is it that in tests of sixteen and
eighteen year olds the youth of Europe
were found to be in better condition than
our youngsters?
The big reason, according to many ex
perts, is that Americans ride everywhere
(and sit too long in front of television sets)
and get very little exercise regularly.
The European gets it —even in a hardier
climate. He often walks to work:, or
uses a bicycle. The children walk to school
in a sterner climate than most of us ex
perience.
Try walking to work instead of driving.
Let your children walk some every day —
regardless of what other children do.
The reward will be in better health and a
better looking and functioning body.

Temptation
Will yuu please tell me if there
is any difference between temp
tation and one’s thoughts? A.N.
Temptation usually comes
through one’s thoughts. As we
have often heard said: “An idle
mind is the devil’s workshop.”
However though evil sugges
tions often come to mind, they
need not be expressed in overt
action. Often, we cannot help, or
have no control, over the
thoughts that enter our minds.
With all the sex advertisements
that are thrust upon us today,
for example, evil thoughts are
bound to enter our minds. The
sin is not the thought itself, but
the entertaining of such
thoughts. Jesus said: “He that
looketh upon a woman to lust af
ter her hath committed adul
tery already in his heart.”
Everyday we look upon those of
the opposite sex. This is not sin,
of course. But if those thoughts
are harbored to the point that
they create lust — then Jesus
said we have sinned.
This, of course, goes for other
kinds of sin as well. We all have
flashes of envy, pride, anger,
and hatred. The human mind is
a spawning place for these. But,
we have been given the power of
choice, and we can throw them
out of our minds. The Bible
says: “There hath no tempta
tion taken you but such as is
common to man. . . but will
make away to escape.” I Corin
thians 10:13.
While we all have the power of
choice — too few of us exercise
it rightly without Christ in our
lives. Paul said: “I can do all
things through Christ which
strengtheneth me.”
