battles coming up Friday and
Saturday by beating the Milner

However, the Griffin Field

night because of exams.
The action started with the
Griffin “B” team beating
Milner 62-40 for its eighth
straight victory.
After the Milner girls stopped
Griffin 40-35, the Eagles jumped
on the Falcons for a 21 point
victory.

line.

points in every quarter for a
five point victory over Griffin.
Griffin led 14-10 after one
quarter but was behind 10-19 at
halftime. Milner had a 30-24
lead going into the fourth

Boudreau Feels McLain
Will Make Hall Os Fame
By STEVE SMILANICH
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPI)-Lou
Boudreau, the former boy
wonder manager of the Cleve
land Indians and newest
member of baseball’s Hall of
Fame, says there’s no reason
his son-in-law can’t win the
same honor and make it a
family affair.
Boudreau’s son-in-law hap
pens to be Denny McLain, the
ace right-handed pitcher for the
Detroit Tigers. Father-in-law
Lou believes in due time Denny
will be accorded Hall of Fame
honors.
“I hope my election has led a
little path he can follow. With
three, four or five more good
years under his belt, there’s no
reason he can’t sit next to me.”
Boudreau, 52, originated the
Ted Williams shift —a
maneuver designed to shift
three infielders to the right side
of the diamond where Williams
aimed most of his hits.
His election, the only one this
year, was announced Tuesday
in the offices of Baseball
Commissioner Bowie Huhn.
The five-time All-Star short
stop, who guided the Indians to
the American League pennant
and the World Series champion
ship in 1948, received 232 votes
from the Baseball Writers
Association of America. A total
of 300 ballots was cast and an
individual has to be named on
three-fourths of the ballots to
gain election.

up in the balloting with 167
votes. He was followed by Gil

Early Wynn, the last major

career victories, was fourth
with 140 votes, followed by

and Red Schoendienst and Pee

Pete Maravich
Averaging 47
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (UPI)—
With Louisiana State’s basket
ball season not quite at the
halfway mark, “Pistol Pete”
Maravich seems to be a cinch
to set a new all-time college
scoring record.
According to Southeastern
Conference statistics released
today Maravich has scored an
average of 47 points in his first
12 games this season to run his
career total to 2,850 points in
64 games.
Maravich averaged 43.8
points a game as a sophomore
and 44.2 as a junior.
Oscar Robertson set the pres
ent record at Cincinnati, scor
ing 2,973 points in 88 games for
a 33.8 average. Elvin Hayes,
who played at Houston, is sec
ond with 2,884 in 93 games for
a 31-point average.
If Maravich scores 35 points
against Kentucky Saturday
night he will take second
place.
Robertson’s record could fall
the following weekend when the
Tigers host Mississippi and
Mississippi State if Maravich
continues to shoot at his present
clip.
With 16 games still on LSU’s
schedule it would appear al
most certain, barring injuries,
that Maravich will far surpass
the mark set by Robertson.

Marciano Beats Clay
In Computer Fight
By WILLIAM VERIGAN
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPl)—Rocky
Marciano, a computer in his

East All-Stars
Overpower West
By RUSS GREEN
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -
Take Willis Reed of the New
York Knicks and Oscar Robert
son of the Cincinnati Royals in
any order you please and you
have two big reasons why the
East overpowered the West 142-
135 Tuesday night in the 20th
National Basketball Association
All-Star game.
Reed, dominating in the
Knicks’ manner, scored 21
points, grabbed 11 rebounds and
picked up the game’s Most
Valuable Player award.
Robertson, playing in his 10th
All-Star game, also collected 21
points, a performance which
enabled him to establish an All-
Star game career scoring
record with a total of 230
points. It eclipsed the career
total of 224 set by Bob Pettit
over an 11-game span.
Reed Was Smooth
The MVP trophy for the
Knicks’ team captain was the
climax of 24 hours of doubt
with stomach pains. Reed took
tests Monday to determine the
pains were muscle spasms and
not ulcers.
Free from pain and with the
game cradled away, Reed was
pleased at his selection.
“At this point I must say its
the greatest honor I have ever
achieved,” Reed said in an
appreciative manner.
And he admitted that “when
the points were going in” he
figured he had a good chance to
cop it, something he hadn’t
done in five previous games.

Robertson, a member of the
winning team for the ninth time
in his 10 games, said he didn’t
know he was overhauling
Pettit’s record.
“I wasn’t even aware of it
until Jack Twyman told me
between halves, but I wasn’t
playing for it. It is some sort of
a distinction, but I didn’t let it
affect me.”
Robertson was second in the
MVP voting but agreed heartily
with the choice of Reed.
Alcindor’s Debut
“He played one helluva
game,” Oscar observed, and
added that when Reed and Lew
Alcindor kept the West throt
tled he felt sure of the win.
Alcindor, the $1.4 million
rookie of the Milwaukee Bucks
who made his All-Star debut
spelling Reed, said he entered
the game “with no great
expectations.”
“But I wanted to go out there
and play without making any
bad moves,” Alcindor said. He
picked up five fouls while
scoring eight points.
Team Effort

but it was just a make-believe,
fictional fight. People have seen

Not even Clay suspected the
ending, which was known by
only three people connected
with the film until shown in
theaters.
Bloody Action
Clay got in his licks early in
the bout, knocking down
Marciano in" the eighth round
and slashing open cuts, but in
the end, Rocky, looking a little
pudgy, prevailed. Marciano
knocked down Clay in the 10th
and 12th rounds to even the
bout, and then finished him off
with a barrage at 57 seconds of
the 13th round.
Chris Dundee, brother of
Clay’s manager, Angelo Dun
dee, had no choice but to toll
the final 10.
“It was the biggest fairy tale
I ever seen,” said Tony Gaento,
who has always believed he
could “moider da bum” Joe
Louis in a rematch. “The whole
thing was a joke. Rocky would
have knocked him out in four
or five rounds at the most.”
In Philadelphia Clay enjoyed
the fight immensely —until the
late rounds. Then, while view
ing the instant replay of one of
the times Rocky had him down,
Clay grumbled, “They’re de
stroying my image. That
