tempt to enforce such orders.
The Maddox suit would re
quest that integration rulings be
uniformly applied in all states.
It further would request that
desegregation by court order be
withheld in Georgia until so ef
fected in the other states.
Maddox said he would ask the
suit to be filed against Attorney
General John Mitchell and
Health, Education and Welfare
Secretary Robert Finch. He
said it probably would be filed
in a Washington, D. C., federal
court in some 12 days.
Maddox urged school officials
to defy the desegregation or
ders in a letter he sent to State
School Supt. Jack Nix, school
superintendents and school
board members across Georgia.
In part, the letter said, “I am
requesting that you and other
officials of education cease im
mediately asking, suggesting or
demanding that our black and
white children and their teach
ers violate the Taw of the
land’—the U. S. Constitution —
by surrendering to the illegal
and unconstitutional demands of
the U. S. Supreme Court...that
deny ‘freedom of choice’.”
Maddox received legislative
backing in his suit when Albany
Rep. George Busbee introduced
two House resolution backing
the governor. The proposed
joint resolution directed Bolton
to file the suit on behalf of the
state and urged Mitchell, the
Justice Department and the
Congress to treat Georgia the
same as it would other states.
Maddox also hinted he might
veto the massive education bud
get because of the desegrega
tion.
“We will use every method
we can to protect the children’s
education,” he said.
He said he favored closing
schools, if necessary, to avoid
the court orders. “I would a
whole lot rather the children
lose a month or a year than
lose their education,”, the gov
ernor said.
At a Tuesday night banquet
of the Georgia Milk Producers,
Maddox said, “The guideline
peddlars...are treating Geor
gia’s school children like num
bers.
“They want to load them into
buses and pack them around
our cities like a shipment of
dairy cattle on the way to one
of your farms.” #
Maddox told the dairymen he
was saddened by the fact par
ents had not joined their chil
dren in protest demonstrations .
against the court-ordered deseg
regation. _
