Speed, Finger Dexterity
Keys to Job as Typist
By ERNIE HOOD
Distributed by NEA
Employment opportunities
for typists are expected to
remain good through all of
the 19705, with more than
50,000 job openings a year.
Greatest demand will be
for those who are able to do
the relatively difficult work
in senior typing jobs and for
those who can do other kinds
of office work, however, for
the reason that duplicating
machines and other me
chanical equipment will
probably be used frequently
for routine typing and other
clerical work, thereby limit
ing somewhat the demand
for junior (beginner) typists.
Close to one million are
employed as typists and
about 95 per cent are wom
en. not counting hundreds of
thousands of other workers
in varied occupations also
using typing skills in con
nection with their main job
assignments.
Most job applicants are re
quired by employers to meet
certain standards of typing
speed and accuracy, and
usually applicants take tests
in this regard. For most
positions, typists must gen
erally be able to type at least

Practically all prospective
typists obtain the training
needed by attending day or
evening classes in public and
private schools. As a matter
jof fact, most employers pre
fer high school graduates.
High school business train
ing. including training in
operation of some of the
simpler office equipment,
such as transcribing, copy
ing and adding machines,
are of help to job applicants.
Important aptitudes and
personality traits for this oc
cupation include finger dex
terity, accuracy, neatness
and ability to concentrate in
the midst of distractions. A
friendly manner and an at
tractive personality also are
great assets.
This field is not without
advancement possibilities,
too, for a good typist may be
promoted from junior to sen
ior typing positions or to
other clerical work involving
greater responsibility and
higher pay. Typists who com
plete training in shorthand
also may advance to steno
graphic or secretarial work.
Salary figures are now
being updated by the Labor
Department’s Bureau of
Labor Statistics, but there is
great variance due to loca
tion and industry, as well as
differences in experience.
Conferences with High
School and Employment
Service Counselors will be
helpful if you are considering
this career field.
