HOLLYWOOD (NEA)
Enterprising Los Angeles real estate dealers carry a sep
arate listing, besides the Houses For Sale and Houses For
Lease categories.
Houses Available for Movie Filming.
And so the company shooting "The Baby Maker had
rented a reasonably ritzy home way up in Coldwater Can
yon. Eight days: $2,000. It is considerably cheaper than
building the same thing in a studio, plus having a lot more
reality.
It does present a few problems, of course. The quarters
are cramped—you can’t move a wall back for a little elbow
room, as you can in a studio. And when Barbara Hershey,
Collin Wilcox-Horne and Sam Groom were doing a scene
in the kitchen, a funny humming noise ruined a couple of
takes.
Finally assistant director Howard Koch Jr. tracked it
down. The refrigerator. He unplugged it and everything
was O.K.
There were signs posted here and there by the owners,
who lived there through it all. "No Smoking In The House.”
"No Crew Members Allowed In Family Living Quarters.”
But nobody seemed to mind. When somebody had a bad
headache, the other assistant director, Joe Ellis, went
scrounging around for some aspirin. In the family living
quarters. With a cigarette.
The three actors, breakfasting in the kitchen, represent
the plot of this very modern comedy. Groom and Miss
Wilcox-Horne are married, but childless. They want a
child, but, apparently, the wife cannot conceive. So they
hire Barbara Hershey as pinch-mother.
It’s a daring theme, but apparently writer-director James
Bridges heard about a case where something of the sort
happened. He whipped up a light but provocative script,
took it to National General, and they bought it. Richard
Goldstone, long Bob Wise’s right-hand man. is producer.
You could call it the modern equivalent of a drawing
room comedy. Today, that would be a drawing pad comedy.
Sam Groom, brought out from the New York stage for
this part, is enjoying it. But he isn’t too sure if he approves
of the whole idea.
He went to Jesuit schools—Holy Cross and Fairfield—
and he knows “the church would not countenance an ar
rangement like this—at least not yet.” He isn’t quite sure
of his own feelings. Fortunately, the situation is not per
sonal. He has three sons.
Barbara Hershey, one of our town’s prides and joys,
was very pregnant in this scene—seven months, supposed
ly. And she said she had been amused by her own reac
tions to the make-believe baby she is allegedly carrying.
“I was very uptight about it at first,” she says. “I didn’t
want people to call it pads’—‘put on your pads, Barbara.’
It bothered me. I felt very protective about it. Strange, I
guess there’s an instinctive thing with women.”
She says she understands Tish—the character she is
playing—and thinks she is a “heavy” girl. “Heavy” is a
new word which means something like worth-while, deep,
groovy.
She is also impressed by how many of the cast and crew
are Aquarians This, apparently, is very significant.
I asked Collin Wilcox-Horne when she acquired the
-Horne. She was always plain—well, never exactly plain—
Collin Wilcox. She said she married Geoffrey Horne (he’s
the dialogue director on “The Baby Maker”) and decided
to keep both last names.
“My father is a stubborn old coot,” she says. “He didn’t
want me to lose the Wilcox. Yet I was married, so I wasn’t
Miss Wilcox any more, I was Mrs. Horne. So I compro
mised and added the hyphen.”

CORONARY CARE UNITS, with an ultimate potential of
saving 50,000 lives yearly in this country, are only one of
many heart-saving developments speeded by your Heart
Fund dollars. The advances since 1950, when massive re
search programs were inaugurated by the Government and
your Heart Association, have yielded a dramatic dividend
—a decline of 20.1 per cent in the cardiovascular mortality
rate for persons under 65 years of age. Despite this im
pressive gain, heart and circulatory diseases continue to
kill more Americans under 65 than the next three causes
combined—cancer, accidents and pneumonia-influenza.
