MOON PHILOSOPHY
CINCINNATI(UPI)—WiIIiam
B. Woermann, celebrating his
100th birthday today, never
gave much thought to landing
man on the moon, but says
everyone sees things different
ly-
“What good’s that going to do
us?” he asked. “Besides, I
always saw men on the moon,
and sometimes when I look at
it, I can see a woman’s figure,
too.”

Benjamin Harrison Medal
Those collectors of the
Presidential medal series
will be interested to know
Presidential Art Medals has
just released the 35th in a
series of 36 medals honoring
those men who served as
presidents of the United
States.
The series opened in 1961
with the John F. Kennedy
medal and all were sculp
tured by the “Sculptor of
Presidents,” Ralph J. Men
coni of New York, who was
selected to produce the Rich
ard M. Nixon Inaugural
medal.
Benjamin Harrison served
as president from 1889 to
1893. He was the grandson of
President William Henry
Harrison and the great
grandson of his namesake,
Benjamin Harrison, a signer
of the Declaration of Inde
pendence and governor of
Virginia.
Each medal in the Presi
dential series displays prac
tically the same obverse ar
rangement, with the profile
turned three-quarters to
wards the viewer and
flanked on either side by the
full name of the person de
picted. The reverse on all 35
pieces is occupied by a re
production of the Presiden
tial Seal, but each varies no
ticeably from the other in
artistic achievement.
One reader has just writ
ten to tell me that he has ar
ranged to turn his entire col
lection of sterling silver
medals in the Presidential
series over to the high
school in his home town. All
35 pieces will be housed in
special plexiglass holders
manufactured for him by
Capital Plastics.
Presidential Art Medals
will gladly furnish detailed
information to anyone writ

HEADED FOR THE MOON are these concepts of equipment designed for use during
future explorations of the lunar surface. At top left is Bell’s one-man Lunar Flying
Vehicle, capable of 30 sorties using residual propellants from descent stage of Lunar
Module. Lunar Rover, top right, is Boeing design which may be first car on the moon.
Powered by electric motors, vehicle will travel at speeds' up to 10 miles an hour,
carrying two astronauts and equipment. Moon house, bottom, is Goodyear’s research
module of an expandable structure to provide a home base for two astronauts on the
moon for eight days. Building is 13 feet long and 7 feet in diameter; would permit an
astronaut to work inside in shirtsleeves, once he has passed through airlock, right.
Ohio 45322. The bronze med
als are available in unlim
ited quantities but the se
rially numbered pieces are
held to 6,590 copies.

Coins Boost Sales
One retail merchant in
York City has found away
to make the coins in your
pocket worth more than
their intended face value
and, if the idea catches on,
it could be one of the great
est advertising gimmicks
ever to hit Madison Avenue.
The following article ap
peared in this week’s issue
of Coin World and by now
it is probably being given
considerable thought
throughout the country:
The “coin gimmick” ad
vertising promotion, or
whatever you care to call it,
originated with Woolco’s De
partment Store in New York
City and, according to all re
ports, it is a success. It was
originally intended as a de
vice to bring new customers
into the store and to move
items that might have been
on the shelf for a long time,
such as a demonstrator or
o b s o 1 e t e-model television,
radio, hi-fi, etc. This is the
way it works:
The store advertised in ad
vance the merchandise to be
offered, along with its cur
rent selling price; then it
published a schedule of
which coins would be called
at what time—nickels at 11
am., dimes at 12 noon and
so on.
At the appointed hour, the
announcer called over the
loudspeaker, “Shoppers,
would you like to buy a port
able television set for less
than S2O? Check the pennies
in your pocket. In the next
five minutes, the first person
to present the oldest-dated
penny to the salesman in the
TV department will buy a
portable television valued at
$79.95 for the price of the
date on the coin.”
The television department
was suddenly deluged with
customers searching their
pockets for coins and exam
ining the dates to determine
which had the oldest date.
The winner was a gentleman
with a well-worn 1917 Lincon
cent.
The hazard of the game, if
you can call it a hazard, is
that the winning coin be
comes the property of the
store, which would rule out
any possibility of someone
stocking their pockets with
old and valuable coins.
The article quotes the
management as saying most
of the coins they take in ex
change for the merchandise
carry dates from 1930 to
1950 and that means the
selling price is from $19.30
to $19.50. However, all is not
completely lost, because it is
possible that some coin col
lector may produce an 1855
half-dollar which may be
worth considerably more
than the original retail price
of the merchandise.
Officials of Woolco main
tain they do not have a name
for the game but the slogan
could well be, “The coins in
your pocket are still worth
money—to us.”
